What are the first things you think of when you hear: therapist?

Your first thought is naturally, someone who helps you get through pain or issues.

There are even therapy services for those with special needs.

What you wouldn’t expect is said therapist going ahead to physically abuse a special needs child out of anger.

Abusive Therapist

According to Mothership, there’s been a rather disturbing video on Facebook the last few days.

Posted on 30 June by Safirah Oshin, it shows CCTV footage of her autistic son and his therapist, who was caught abusing him.

The video is quite disturbing so please watch at your own risk.

Said post has gone extremely viral, with over 3100 reactions, 1500 comments and shared more than 8600 times.

The incident happened on 29 March 2019 and Safirah was outraged that the man was only given a ‘verbal warning’.

Stories Not Adding Up

The therapist has been identified to be from Autism STEP, who conducts “1-to-1 Home-Based ABA therapy”.

On 1 July, the company released a statement on Facebook regarding the matter.

In fact, they even ‘confirmed’ in a comment on another post that they have already provided Safirah with monetary compensation.

Except, according to her, they didn’t.

Safirah made a follow-up post and stated that there was no agreement for compensation. Instead, she only asked for a refund of fees paid to Autism STEP.

She also mentioned that the company has not paid her in any way.

Pending Resolution

Even till this day, the case remains in a stalemate.

The company had let the therapist go back on 30 March 2019.

They claimed that they have visited and apologised to the family on the day of the incident.

In addition, they asked Safirah to retract her police report.

She then found out the case was closed on August 2019 and was told the therapist was let off with a verbal warning and nothing else.

The case has since been reopened on January 2020 albeit with a new Investigation Officer since last week.

Safirah then assumed there was no progress on the case and released the clips on Facebook.

MSF Steps In

You know the incident is serious when the Minister for Social and Family Development (MSF) Desmond Lee enters the fray.

In his own Facebook post, he said that he had received many messages and “asked that this matter be looked into thoroughly”

Even the previous MSF, Tan Chuan-Jin, has come forward to speak up regarding this case.

We hope that Safirah and her family get their due recompense.
