I won’t lie.

I was truly taken aback when I received this article headline in my mailbox.

Spinning around deftly on my roller-chair, I asked BH, my editor, “Eh, are you sure it’s okay if we write about Toto? Isn’t gambling a no-no for us?”

BH: “What? But Toto is charity what.”

Me: “If Toto is charity, then lizards are fish skin, cyclists and drivers are best friends, and Obike and Ofo are still the darling of the transport-sharing community.”

BH: “You must clearly be living under a rock then because don’t you know all surplus generated from Singapore Pools’ operations are channelled to the Tote Board Group (comprising Tote Board, Singapore Pools and Singapore Turf Club) and fund worthy causes in the arts, community development, charity, education, health and sports sectors?”

Me: “Say only what, so how much have they given to the Tote Board Group over the last ten years?”

BH: “Uhhh, how about like $6 billion?”

Me: “Okay I get it, but lizards are still not fish skin okay.”

Lest you are unaware, two lucky winners took home 9.58 million in the 14 Jan draw and 9.7 million in the 3 Jan draw respectively.

They are till date, the second-largest and largest amounts won by a single person since 2014, when the Toto game was updated to its current format.

It does indeed seem like this year of the pig might turn out to be indeed a year of the piggy-bank.

Oinks.

That said, please remember “customers should play [Singapore Pool] games just for a little flutter and it must not adversely affect their finances or lifestyle”, so says a disclaimer on Singapore Pools page.
