I donโ€™t know about you, but I love Malaysian street coffee shops.

And itโ€™s not even because Iโ€™m a sucker for all things Malaysian (said no one ever).

But hereโ€™s the thing; Singaporean coffee shops canโ€™t quite replicate that homely, traditional feel thatโ€™s so exclusive to Malaysian ones.

Sure, some might have advertently (or inadvertently) done it before, but with time theyโ€™ve too, ditched comfort for technology in order to compete with their peers. Sad, but a reality it is.

Yet what if I tell you that thereโ€™s a coffee shop right here in Singapore thatโ€™s not just reminiscent of the classic old ones, but downright similar? And what if I tell you that they serve fluffy bread thatโ€™s so softโ€ฆ

Youโ€™ll feel like youโ€™re walking on ninth heaven?

Seng Hong Coffeeshop

Now make no mistake; I had no idea what this place was prior to yesterday (17 September). Sure, I might not be your most well-educated foodie, but if the whole office was caught unaware about it itโ€™s probably not just me.

And then we went there, and suffice it to say that at the end of the day, itโ€™s a name we shall remember for monthsโ€ฆ no, years to come.

Located at Blk 58 Lengkok Bahru, this unassuming little coffee shop serves up traditional toast and coffee. But do not be fooled by its humble moniker, as itโ€™s not your conventional roti and kopi.

In fact, itโ€™s so far from conventional it had our resident videographer and actress all hyped up and dancing to the beats of Rockstar by Post Malone.

Unfortunately we lack a video representation of the actual scene, and this is the closest imagery we can actually find. Image: Giphy

But long story short; itโ€™s justโ€ฆ indescribable.

For one, they donโ€™t just offer mouth-watering toasted bread (which tastes as good as it looks by the way).

(Can you hear that crunch through your screen? Damn)

They offerโ€ฆ

Soft, fluffy steamed bread.

Now I know what youโ€™re thinking:

โ€œIsnโ€™t that just plain white bread? Gardenia is it?โ€

Before you storm into our office and slay two of us, however, just know that Iโ€™m aware of its less than revolutionary appearance.

But like that girl next door with a heart of gold, this bread is one gem you have to try, to really appreciate the โ€œgreener pastures of lifeโ€.

In fact, my colleague had this exact chunk of words to describe the bread:

โ€œYUMMY FLUFFY BUNS. SOFT LIKE THE CLOUDS. SOFTER THAN MY BED,โ€ she screamed.

โ€œChill, you on salted egg or something?โ€

โ€œYES. THE BREAD IS SO FLUFFLY (incorrect spelling intended). I GOT A SHOCK WHEN I TOUCHED IT. ITโ€™S LIKE TOUCHING AIR. ITโ€™S A CLOUD!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆ So how does it really taste like?โ€

โ€œWHAT DO CLOUDS TASTE LIKE? ITโ€™S REALLY THE SOFTEST BREAD EVER. BUTTER AND PEANUT BUTTER AND KAYA WEW.โ€

Suffice it to say that she was gone. Whatever this fluffy white bread was, it had her hooked line and sinker.

And if thatโ€™s not convincing enough, check this out.

Breaking apart with the most delicate of ease, this fluffy, โ€œcloud-likeโ€ bread just reaches out to you, enticing you, seducing you.

Hungry yet? Because I SURE am.

Also, if youโ€™re a kopi addict, youโ€™ll be thrilled to know that they serve one of those thick and full-bodied ones that just envelops your entire mouth. Creamy and fragrant, forget all your generic coffee shop kopis.

This shit is the bomb.

Traditional is da wae

Incidentally, it isnโ€™t just the food and setting that screams โ€˜TRADITIONALLLLLโ€™ either.

Even the preparation methods are, for lack of a better phrase, ancient af. Like literally.

Apparently, the folks over at Seng Hong boil water from an ancient pot thatโ€™s rumoured to be at least 70 years old. But do not freak out, because they actually clean the pot and decant the water at the end of the day.

So no remnants of some ancient sauce in your toast when you pop it into your mouth.

What are you waiting for?

Just to set the record straight, my colleagues were never this hyped, even when eating Jia Yuen Eating Houseโ€™s Salted Egg Buttermilk Chicken Rice (which in my opinion is Heavenโ€™s gift to mankind when he realised how deprived weโ€™re all getting). So you can kind of get the drift here:

Seng Hongโ€™s that good.

Whatโ€™s more, itโ€™s friendly with your leather wallet too, seeing how bread retail at $0.80 cents each and kopi at $1.10. So essentially, youโ€™re able to get a wholesome, delicious, and satisfying snack under $2 here.

Like whatttttt.

So really, get your ass down as soon as possible, because believe it when I say:

Youโ€™ve gotta try it.
