What are the things that you can get for $5 each? You may answer a cup of latte, a McDonald’s lunchtime extra value meal or a magazine. But do you know that you can also buy a smartphone? Yes, a fully functional Android smartphone!

Produced by a company in Nodia called Ringing Bells, the Freedom 251 is currently the cheapest smartphone in the world.

Specifications
The phone runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop with a 4-inch qHD display, 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of capacity (expandable up to 32GB). It also supports 3G SIM network and has a 3.2 mega pixels rear camera, 0.3 mega pixels front camera and 1450mAh battery.

Appearance
The phone is clearly inspired by Apple’s iPhone with its all white body and silver-rimmed home button. For the price that you’re paying, don’t expect it to function like an iPhone though. The app icons also bear an uncanny resemblance to iOS. If Ringing Bells is not careful, this could result in a violation of intellectual property rights–Apple absolutely forbids the use of its logos and icons without a trademark license.

Pre-installed Apps
The Freedom 251 will come pre-installed with apps for women’s safety, Swachh Bharat app as well as other apps that will help people living in rural areas. With the immense support of the India government, the company aims to allow everyone to have access to technology by increasing connectivity in the country.

Sales
On its first day of preorder, the company received 30,000 pre-paid orders while over seven million people registered for it. Preorders have already closed and the company is expected to start deliveries in April and finish by 30th June 2016, after which a second round of preorders will be opened.  Due to recent negative speculations, the company has decided to refund all 30,000 customers back their money and offer cash on delivery. This was a move in a bid to enhance transparency and increase consumers’ confidences.
