With over 200 Kit Kat flavours in the world–predominantly available in Japan–Nestle Japan has come up with yet another innovative new flavour: seafood Kit Kats. Say what!
Japan Nestle is really serious about their weird Kit Kat flavours; so much so that they hire people just to come up with weird flavours. Some of the special Kit Kat flavours that they have released include Cherry Blossom, Soy Bean Powder, Pumpkin and the ever popular Green Tea (tourists usually lug suitcases full of these back).
Odd Flavors Manager (yes that’s an official job title in Nestle Japan!), Daisuke Warau announced during a press conference that the refreshing seafood lineup would include salmon, clam, prawn and squid.
The release of the seafood flavour is in commemoration of Japan’s long maritime history, as well as a bittersweet farewell to the beloved Tsukiji Fish Market. The market will be moving to a new location later this year.
Said Mr Warau: “With this new lineup of Kit Kat flavors, we are paying homage to Japan’s long connection to the sea and to the storied location where fishermen have sold their catch for generations – also, to be honest, we were running out of ideas and this seemed like a good one at the time.”
He also added that although this was not an entirely new combination (Lotte’s Ghana and Calbee’s Kappa Ebisen released a chocolate shrimp collection), no company has gone as far as to add real chunks of seafood to the chocolate. Nestle Japan promised a totally unique experience with this new flavour and told consumers to “watch out for bones”.
The seafood Kit Kats will be available for a limited time only at a pop up store located inside Tsukiji’s Uogashi Yokocho. Even before the store opened, long lines had been forming in front of the store–a sign of the popularity of novelty Kit Kat flavours in Japan.
