“Watch what you say online.” These wise words aren’t for nothing – the moment you put something on the Internet, it’s there. For good. And if it just so happens to be something absurd, you can be sure to get called out for it.
The Internet is a savage place, and these five keyboard warriors can attest to that. They wrote something stupid about Singapore(ans), posted it on social media, and got brought to justice by the Internet police.
1. Anton Casey
Casey made headlines back in 2014 for publishing two Facebook posts mocking local MRT commuters. In one, a picture of his five-year-old son on an MRT train was followed by the caption: “Daddy where is your car & who are all these poor people?”
In the second post, his son is featured, yet again, in a silver Porsche along with the comment: “Normal service can resume, once I have washed the stench of public transport off me for f**k’s sake!”
Of course, netizens didn’t take too kindly to Casey’s egoistic behaviour, with some even digging up his home address, place of work, and his home and mobile-phone numbers. This eventually culminated in him leaving for Perth with his wife and son “due to threats made towards [his] family”.
2. Sun Xu
NUS ex-scholar Sun Xu definitely regretted likening Singaporeans to dogs. A rough translation of his Weibo blogpost read: “It’s so annoying to have gangster Singapore uncles stare at you when you bump into them. There are more dogs than humans here in Singapore.”
Sun’s rude comment sparked an outrage among Singaporeans, who considered him to be “unjustified, rude and ignorant”. Many also called for his scholarship to be revoked.
His “sincere apologies” weren’t of any use, as NUS ultimately rescinded the engineering student’s scholarship benefits for his final semester. The then 24-year-old was required to pay back about $8,200 worth of school fees.
3. Ello Ed Mundsel Bello
Filipino Ello Ed Mundsel Bello wrote on Facebook that Singaporeans are “loosers (losers) in their own country”, and that he was “praying that disators (disasters) will strike Singapore and more Singaporeans will die”.
Bello’s behaviour not only angered local netizens, but his fellow countrymen as well. They even created a Facebook group called ‘Petition to deport Edz Ello the Filipino’ in a bid to stop Bello from being a “shame and disgrace”.
His previous employer, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, released a statement saying The hospital then dismissed him soon after. On top of that, Bello was jailed for four months under the Sedition Act.
4. Caleb Rozario
Caleb Rozario stoked the ire of netizens after posting the following video on Facebook that showed Marina Bay Sands being attacked by missiles.
Along with this caption:
This isn’t the first time Rozario has sparked a controversy. He drew flak on several occasions for his other Facebook comments, such as those calling Singaporeans “shameless introverts”. Netizens were so furious with the then 23-year-old that they even lodged a police report against him, which led to the police hunting him down and going through his computers and mobile phones.
5. Sonny Truyen
Truyen’s reason for taking a dig at Singapore might be the stupidest one of the bunch. Angry that mobile game Pokémon Go wasn’t available here, a trigger-happy Truyen called Singapore a “f**king sh*t country” on Facebook in this post:
After a back-and-forth with another Facebook user turned nasty, netizens quickly sourced out his place of work – which happened to be property listing portal 99.co – and led to his eventual termination from the company after just a week.
