#ThirstyThursday: Coca-Cola Lime Review: Tastes Like Sweet Vodka Lime Without The Alcohol Kick

With the amount of flavours Coke has nowadays, I won’t be surprised that soon, we’d have a Salted Egg Coke.

Or a Pepsi-Coke. Now that’ll be epic.

I believe you’d have known why I’m ranting—apparently, there’s a Coca-Cola with Lime in the market.

And according to my intense research that took a few minutes, it’s a rather “new” product: new because it used to be sold but has since been discontinued.

A Bit of History

A check on FairPrice On (NTUC FairPrice online store) revealed that the drink isn’t available there.

That’s understandable, because the ones that we’ve got seemed to be imported from Japan.

You see, the drink was allegedly discontinued in the US in 2006, and a new version, Diet Coke with Lime, was released.

It’s unclear what happened to it, but the drink has been available in Japan (and several other counties) since 2015.

And recently, we spotted it in 7-Eleven, and so, here we are for this week’s #ThirstyThursday

Coca-Cola Lime

Unlike the usual Coke can, this imported drink is a tad smaller, at mere 250 ml.

Everything’s written in Japanese so I’ve no idea what the text in the can meant; I asked my colleague Mr Bao, who watched lots of Japanese movies, to translate for me, but it turns out that he watches Japanese movies (or short clips, he claims) just for the actions and not the story.

While it’s cute, I’m wondering whether it can quench thirst given its relatively small size.

But turns out that like what many wise writers have said, “Less is more.”

Taste Test

I’ve got to admit: I wasn’t having any expectation.

It’s basically Coke mixed with lime; I can imagine how it tastes even without taking a sip.

But boy, was I wrong.

The distinct taste of Coke is there, but unlike other weird-flavour Coke whereby the gassy taste of Coke would overpower its special flavour, this is different.

When I take my first sip, it reminded me of something.

What is it, I wondered. Lime juice that’s carbonated? Soursop juice that’s gassy?

Then it occurred to me.

It’s like Vodka Lime, minus the alcohol kick and with a thick sweetness of Coke.

I know it’s a sin to compare such a legendary drink to a Coke, but honestly speaking, that’s the closest description I can think of.

If it has been less sweet, I think it’d have been perfect.

You see, it’s the strong lime taste that makes this concoction a masterpiece: if I give this to someone for a blind taste, he or—wait, let me try.

Me: How? What do you think it is?

BuffLord95: Coke with Lime?

Me: How do you know?

BuffLord95: It’s black, so it’s either Coke or Pepsi.

In other words, it’s impossible to do a blind taste with its colour, but you get the gist: the lime is so strong, no one would have mistaken it for any other fruits. Or flavour.

Should you try it? At 115 calories per small can, it’s definitely not for anyone who’s watching their weight. But if you’ve a cheat day, this is one drink that’s worth the calories.

Rating: 4.5 / 5 (I would have given it a 5/5 if it’s less sweet)
