#ThirstyThursdays: Magnolia Fresh Milk with Kurma Review: Sweet, Sweet Dates

On this day, my boss suddenly told me he set up a date for me.

What? How does this even work? Why would my boss even do that?

Dates are the worst. You never know who you’re meeting and sometimes people are just psycho and they start talking about having a family even though it is only the fir-

Wait, wrong dates?

Oh… that date.

Magnolia’s Fresh Milk with Kurma

So, uh… Yeah, I guess I’m reviewing Magnolia’s Fresh Milk with Kurma (Real Dates).

But I have to admit, dates are the worst. No, for real this time.

They don’t taste bad, but the hard jelly texture and the fact that they look like cockroaches (sorry) meant that I don’t particularly like them. Yeah, I’m superficial when it comes to dates.

Only 2 ingredients

So I have to say I’m not an expert on dates here, but the ingredient list is impressive here:

That’s right, only Fresh Milk and Dates Extract. No sugar, no preservatives. Nothing else.

Milk with dates is an actual recipe in many cultures, though according to the press release by Magnolia we received, they are also used in the local Malay community, being known as kurma.

It is said that Prophet Muhammad broke his fast everyday eating a date, so it became a tradition for Muslims to break their fast by eating a date.

But just in case you thought dates were only culturally significant, the health benefits for dates was so long I thought the date itself is a god in fruit form.

Here: fat-free, cholesterol-free, sodium-free, contain vitamin A, B-complex vitamins necessary for tissue and muscle building, contains minerals like magnesium, iron, phosphorus, copper, calcium, potassium, rich in fibre, contain tannins for anti-infective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hemorrhagic properties, antioxidant properties and promote healthy eyes and skin, and the other benefits not mentioned by the above.

But ThirstyThursdays don’t care about health benefits. Only about the taste. So here goes…

Milk with dates are classic for a reason

The milk itself is almost cream-like in texture, being thicker than normal fresh milk.

There’s no particular smell to this. But on taste…

It’s sweet and creamy, taking only the best parts of dates (the taste and not the texture, for me). But it’s not cloying and too sugary. The smooth velvety texture doesn’t make it too rich to drink more than a cup.

Was this… what I’ve been missing from dates all this time? I feel like a child discovering chocolate milk when all I’ve tasted is regular milk.

It doesn’t even taste healthy, which is the best part. (Though it is still sugary since dates contain sugar.)

It is something quite simple, just milk and dates, that I feel pretty weird for giving a score to this. Almost like giving a score to sugar and tea, but here goes:

Rating: 4/5

If you drinking plain milk feels wrong, or you like the taste of dates but not the texture, then perhaps this is the product for you.

I can also see this as a replacement for regular milk in cooking. Kurma milk tea? Crepes with kurma milk? Kurma rice puddings? Kurma custards?

Guess I’ve got a date to catch.
