Trying to eat healthily outside is an expensive affair. Take salads for example, the average pricing starts from $7 a serving and goes up to $20 for fancier salads. And that’s just for some pathetic lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and egg!
For poor people like me who are the occasional health-junkie wannabe, my go-to “healthy” food is always Subway. It’s good, it’s cheap and most importantly, I get to customise exactly what type of sandwich I want! Today, I’m going to give away my favourite Subway combo secret (which has been quite popular among my friends) so that you can try it out.
Start off with a 6-foot long Parmesan Oregano as your bread. I love the powdery cheese bits on the crust and it adds a nice texture to the soft fluffy interior of the bread.
For the filling, I like to go for something protein-packed. And since I am a huge fan of turkey ham, the Cold Cut Trio is what I usually like to go for. I know I know, it’s not exactly the healthiest choice since ham is processed meat and recent reports have categorised it as cancer-causing food. But hey, I make up for that with all the veggies that I’m going to put in my sub later. Plus, I usually workout thrice a week (and by thrice I mean when-I-feel-like-it, which is usually never).
Be patient as you watch the person cut open your bread, place the stack of ham onto it and lay the cheese on top (I’m usually trying to resist drooling at this point).
For the veggies, there’s nothing that I don’t like so I simply say “all” to the staff. If you feel particularly indulgent–and I always do–add guacamole to your sub. When it comes to dressing, honey mustard adds a tinge of sweetness and complements the savoury of the turkey ham. I also ask for a dash of salt and pepper for good luck.
I usually don’t order a meal combo because the sandwich is hearty and really filling. The best part is that this only costs $5.70 (if you exclude the guacamole), a price you’ll never get from cafes or other sandwich shops in Singapore!
Now that you have the recipe for the best combo in Subway, go eat fresh.
