This Year’s Dengue Cases Have Exceeded the Total No. of 2018 Cases & It’s Only May

If you’ve not done the 5-step mozzie wipe-out, it’s perhaps time to do it now.

Especially if you live in Woodlands.

If you don’t, we might have to face the large dengue crisis we had in 2013 again, whereby those pesky mosquitoes took eight people’s lives.

Dengue Cases Currently at 3,541 for 2019

It’s only May and we’ve got more cases than the whole of last year.

Last year, the whole of 2018 saw only 3,285 cases, which isn’t healthy but at least better than what we’re facing now. This year, three people had died from dengue.

According to NEA’s data, there’s a spike in the number of cases since last month.

Here are the numbers to scare you for your reference:

14 to 20 Apr: 135 cases

21 to 27 Apr: 157 cases

28 Apr to 4 May: 194 cases

5 to 11 May: 288 cases

12 to 18 May: 310 cases

19 to 25 May: 381 cases

See the trend so far? There’s an increase every single week.

And as of yesterday (27 May 2019), there’s already 74 reported cases for this week, which means we’ve not improved. Yet.

How Dangerous is Dengue Fever?

Then let this convince you.

You’d have known that dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus that’s spread by the Aedes mosquitoes, but do you know that you can get what is known as “severe dengue”, especially if you’re an elderly, or you’re infected the second time with a different strain of the virus?

When this happens, the victim might need to be treated in an intensive care unit, and delayed treatment might lead to shock or multi-organ failure, which can be fatal.
