It’s never easy to climb to success in the cutthroat world of business.

You’d be surprised of the lengths people go to, forgetting their conscience and morals if only to secure business deals and rake in more money.

Not only would you be earning more money if you resort to underhanded means, though, for you’ll also be earning more karma that will bite you back someday.

Man Jailed For Threatening Real Estate Agent

Business consultant Joshua Yip Ka Wai got his just desserts after attempting to threaten his real estate agent by blackmailing her with a video showing her performing a sexual act on him.

On Tuesday (30 Mar), the 36-year-old Singaporean and boss of Joshua Yip Training & Consultancy pleaded guilty to two charges of criminal intimidation.

He now faces 12 weeks in jail, with a third similar charge considered in his sentencing which will begin on 8 April.

Yip first got to know the 30-year-old victim through mutual friends in 2010 and had been staying in contact since.

Come 4 September 2018, he informed her that his Vietnamese business partner was looking to purchase two private residential properties here in Singapore.

The two then struck up a profit-sharing agreement after a few face-to-face meetups and email exchanges, where Yip expected to receive at least 60% of the estimated $290,000 in  commissions resulting from the deal.

What Happened In Vietnam

Following the agreement, the victim travelled to Ho Chi Minh City on 29 November 2018 to meet Yip’s business partner and other prospective Vietnamese buyers, promoting some private residential property projects here in Singapore.

Yip was also there at the meeting.

However, the victim had dinner with the Vietnamese business partner and another real estate agent the next day, a meeting that Yip was not aware of.

After finding out about it, Yip was enraged and began to grow suspicious of the victim. He thought that she might be discussing a separate property agreement and leaving him out of gaining extra commission.

He invited her to his apartment in Ho Chi Minh City, alleging that she did not handle the property deal well and asked her to leave the other agent out of it.

Yip then gave her a condition: if she wished to continue with their profit-sharing agreement, she would have to perform oral sex on him.

She agreed, not knowing that Yip had secretly filmed the act with his mobile phone.

Blackmailed Her For Money

They returned to Singapore shortly after, and met up again for dinner on 18 December 2018.

Yip told her about the incriminating video then, and threatened her saying that he would email the video to authorities and others like the Council for Estate Agencies and the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau.

He planned to frame her by including a message that she was getting property deals in exchange for sexual favours—unless she could pay him $20,000 within the next three days.

Evil, right?

One week later on the 24th, he even got one of his Vietnamese employees, Mr Dung Tran, to send her another message because she failed to send the money.

Mr Dung Tran had the video in his hands and sent three screenshots of it along with a long, threatening message to the victim according to Yip’s instructions.

It contained strings of vulgarities that cannot be replicated in this article, as well as threats that the video would be sent to media companies like Mothership and “GoodFeed”.

Yikes, at least learn how to spell our name right before threatening others with it.

Yip could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, or both for each charge of criminal intimidation.

Doesn’t seem that great to threaten and coerce someone now, does it?
