When you’re already steaming with anger, there’s nothing like some nice steamboat to calm you down right?

Or, you know, you could just use the food as ammo like this fellow did.

For revenge is a dish best served… hot.

Jailed For Throwing Food At Someone’s Car

56-year-old Chew Thiam Huat pleaded guilty on Monday (29 Mar) to one charge of behaving in a disorderly manner, and another for committing a rash act that endangered others’ life or personal safety.

Two other charges of harassment were also taken into account.

Yep, all that for being aggressive towards a stranger and throwing food at said stranger’s car—how peculiar, right?

Chew visited the Outram Road branch of Lao You Ji Fishhead Steamboat Restaurant last year on 16 August with his girlfriend to have a meal.

The couple was eating at an outdoor table when a car pulled up and parked beside them with the engine left on.

Lim Zhen Long, the driver of the car, then stepped out with his wife and a friend to smoke some distance away.

However, Chew was angered by the fact that the car engine had been left on and presumably told a restaurant staff member about it, who approached Lim to convey the message.

However, Lim had left the engine on for a good reason: it was actually so that his two young daughters could continue to enjoy the aircon in the car.

Stubbing out his cigarette immediately, Lim then went back to his car to a shocking sight.

Food Fight

You may think food fights only happen in movies, but nope.

Chew had thrown his steamboat food all over the car, as he couldn’t stand the noise and exhaust fumes.

Lim’s daughters were also left crying, shocked by Chew’s actions.

After Lim asked the staff member who was behind the deed, Chew confronted him and said he had done it because the car was “noisy and smelly”.

The pair continued arguing while Lim’s wife and friend returned. His wife decided to clean up the mess on the car while their friend stood beside Lim to get a sense of the situation.

Chew then aggressively declared the proposition of a fight and shouted a Hokkien vulgarity at them.

What’s the best way to deal with a food fight? Fight back with food, of course.

Lim grabbed hold of a plate of leftover food and threw it at Chew, who was lucky that the food had not been hot.

Chew retaliated by lurching forward to throw an unknown object at Lim and his friend, which they managed to dodge. Lim’s friend then threw a chair at Chew. Ouch.

Someone tried to restrain Chew to get them to calm down before the situation worsened, but the two sides continued their argument.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Samyata Ravindran sentenced Chew to seven days of jail, revealing that Chew had quite the criminal record that dated back to 2007.

Chew had faced two stints in jail and caning for drug-related offences, and again jailed in 2018 for theft.

However, he pleaded for leniency, saying that he had already been in custody for more than a month.

Disorderly behaviour could have landed him in up to six months of jail, fined up to S$2,000, or both. The same could have been imposed for committing a rash act, with the fine penalty going up to S$2,500 instead.

Lesson learnt: don’t play with your food.
