A while back, my friend asked me this question:

“Hey, bro, do you know about Tiger Sugar?”

“Yeah,” I replied. “Why?”

“I keep seeing it on my Insta story. The queues look so long sia. Got that good meh?”

I shrugged. “Singaporeans have always been crazy for bubble tea. What’s new?”

Thereafter an awkward pause emerged, during which the two of us sat beside each other in stony silence. Then, as we slowly turned to look each other in the eyes, his lips parted.

“Wanna go try it?” he asked.

I contemplated. “It’s at Capitol Plaza though. That’s City Hall.”

“Forget it then,” he said.

He sighed, and started playing with his balls. The taro balls in his KOI beverage swirled around as he blew air through the straw. “If only Tiger Sugar opens another outlet nearby-”

“Wait bro.”

He looked up. “What?”

I didn’t look at him. Not because I can’t stand to look at him, but because I was too busy looking at my phone.

“According to my colleague, Tiger Sugar’s opening another outlet.”

His eyes lit up.

“Where?!” he exclaimed.

Is it worth it though?

My friend looked on in anticipation.

“There’s a giveaway too?!”

“Apparently,” I said. “200 daily for 2 days… we will have to go super early if that’s the case cos you know how Singaporeans are.”

He nodded his head, almost in resignation. “Forget it then.” He then perked up. “But wait, is it good though? Is it worth the wait?”

I browsed through my Goody Feed app. “Wait ah, I know my colleague did a taste test on it before… hmm… mm… OKAY FOUND IT.”

“What, what?” he breathed, as he leaned in closer. I felt his hot breath on my face as I started reading out the verdict:

“When the cup came out, it was warm at the bottom and cold at the top. Kind of like your coffee shop kopi peng that you know is made fresh by the uncle.

The cup is covered in a layer of brown sugar before brown sugar boba, mini pearls and ice are added into the cup.”

“Sounds good!” my friend said excitedly.

“Wait, there’s more.”

“Customers are required to shake the drink exactly 15 times before drinking it. And for good reason.

Nobody knows why 15’s the magical number except those who came up with it but here’s how it ends up.

The brown sugar and milk combined beautifully into a concoction that’s not too sweet, but not too bland.

And the brown sugar boba, cooked in brown sugar for two-and-a-half hours in the store, adds to the flavour with every chew.

The fresh cream mousse adds a creamy texture to the entire drink that makes it worth every single cent you’ve spent on it.

And everything’s made fresh in-store.”

We sat there in an awed silence.

“Cool beans,” he breathed.

“Cool balls,” I corrected him. “Anyway you can check out the full article yourself here if you want.”

“Here? Where?”

“Never mind that. Hey, they have a video too!”

“Whoa, really? Let me see!”

I proceeded to open the video with my precious 4G. “This video better be worth it,” I muttered.

We looked at it long after it ended.

“Looks good,” I said decidedly.

“Definitely,” he agreed.

And as we leaned in closer, I breathed:

“So what’re we waiting for? It’s time right?”

“For December?” he said. “That’s when it opens right?”

“Oh right,” I said slowly.

I whipped out a pen and paper.

“What’re you doing?” he asked.

“Got to jot down the details.”

“Dude you have your phone.”

“Ain’t the same, man.”

Eyebrows furrowed, I wrote down the exact details.

Date & Time : 8 Dec ( Saturday) 11:00am
Location: 133 new bridge rd #B1-42
Chinatown point, (Exit G at Chinatown MRT station).

As I looked down at my handiwork, I fidgeted with my hands.

“So… is it a date then?”

He looked up.

“It’s a date,” he nodded.

And as they looked at each other, this poor editor decided to take over because he’s getting a little uncomfortable with all the balls… taro balls blowing around.

But hey, do not let that deride your decision to try the new outlet.

Cos it’s that good.
