Needless to say, showering at night after a long day spent in Singapore’s humidity is probably a part of everyone’s daily routine. There’s really nothing you can say to justify not doing so.
Well, except for maybe one of those rare days when one is truly too exhausted to do anything once they arrive home except collapse on the couch; I am sure we’ve all been guilty of this, am I right readers?
Reader: don’t pull me into this! I shower religiously every single day. No excuses.
Showering in the morning, however, how become a topic of debate amongst Singaporeans on TikTok.
How It Started
The debate was ignited by local influencer Steph Leong (@mianbaobreadpan) when she posted a TikTok with headers in capital letters, “Guys, PLEASE SHOWER BEFORE YOU GO OUT”.
@mianbaobreadpan I did consider if I was just more sensitive because I have an acute sense of smell BUT wayyyyy too many people voted and agree with me, some even shared their personal stories and it’s nasty af 🤢 I don’t know, what do y’all think? singapore
In the TikTok, she emphasised that it was Singaporean Chinese men who were the source of the problem–or rather, the stink.
Quoting Leong, these individuals “smell like (they) haven’t washed their bedsheet in months and have marinated in months of night sweat and hair oil.”
Cue gagging sound effects.
Leong even displayed results of an Instagram poll she had carried out, which showed that 74% of people “smell this all the time”.
She believes that this is “considered public nuisance” and that “showering in the morning is just basic courtesy to the people you are going to interact with throughout the day”.
She also suggested individuals to get a a friend to perform a “sniff test” on them, to confirm whether or not one smells.
Personally, unless you are giving me S$100 and a lifetime’s worth of bubble tea, I am not going to agree to be anyone’s sniff tester.
No More Majulah Singapura
Steph Leong’s TikTok has gone viral, with 257.1K views and almost 1.5K comments.
The saga has been termed as “Mandilah Singapura”, as it has divided viewers into two camps: one wholeheartedly agreeing with her, and the other insisting that showering in the morning is not a must.
In the former, another TikTok user Luqmaan (@luqmanshii) posted a TikTok sharing his opinion, saying that “the issue is simple”; showering in the morning is part of basic hygiene and there are no excuses not to do so.

TikTok user Noah Yap (@onlynoah) also mentions in a TikTok he posted that Singapore is not lacking water in any way, and that it is a very simple task for individuals to shower in the morning.
@onlynoah tag your gross friend and SHAME THEM #sg #showertok
On the other hand, many individuals claimed that they smell fine even though they do not shower in the morning.
One “member” of this camp, TikTok user Xin Hui (@xinderellah), posted a TikTok of her jokingly pleading people to stop asking her to shower in the morning, as she already has insufficient sleep, and does not want to wake up earlier to shower.
@xinderellah please 🙏🙏🙏
TikTok user AuntieFei (@auntiefei) also admitted that she does not shower in the morning, as she already showers at night, and claims that she does not sweat as she sleeps in an air-conditioned room.

Several netizens and TikTok users came to a more neutral standpoint, sharing that if showering in the morning requires too much effort, individuals should at the very least put in some effort to freshen up and apply deodorant.
In response to the emerging debate, Steph Leong made a follow-up TikTok, expressing her surprise that the topic of personal hygiene could go viral.
She claims that individuals in the latter camp are experiencing cognitive dissonance, hence being so defensive over a habit that they are aware is not healthy.
The Conclusion
At the end of the day, everyone’s body is different–for some weird reason, your body may not produce any oil or sweat even in Singapore’s heat.
But really, most of us can only daydream about that. Unless your goal is to knock everyone in your MRT cabin before they even have the chance to get to work, please just take the precaution and shower in the morning.
