TikTok executed layoffs affecting at least a dozen employees in its trust and safety department in Singapore on 20 February 2025, reported The Straits Times.
The job cuts occurred as part of a broader global restructuring effort spanning multiple regions, including Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the United States.
Dealing With Regulatory Pressures
These operational changes arrive during a period of significant uncertainty for the platform.
The app, used by nearly half of Americans, experienced a brief outage last month before a law mandated its Chinese parent company ByteDance to either sell it or face a complete ban due to national security concerns.
Adam Presser, TikTok’s Head of Operations responsible for Trust & Safety, informed employees about the restructuring through an official memo. Some affected employees had their system access revoked within an hour of receiving termination notices.
TikTok CEO Chew Shou Zi had previously stated in January 2024 that the company employed over 40,000 professionals in trust and safety roles globally. The company had also committed to investing over US$2 billion (S$2.7 billion) in trust and safety efforts that year.
The latest restructuring follows previous workforce reductions at TikTok. In May 2024, the company planned substantial cuts to its global user, content, and marketing teams.
By October 2024, hundreds of employees were laid off, particularly in Malaysia, as TikTok increased its use of artificial intelligence for content moderation.
Current Operations
ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, maintains over 380 job openings and internships in Singapore, while its global workforce exceeds 150,000 across 120 cities.
The Singapore-based employees who lost their jobs can seek assistance from the NTUC-affiliated Tech Talent Assembly.
TikTok’s restructuring mirrors similar trends in the tech industry.
Meta recently executed layoffs affecting thousands of roles globally, including positions in Singapore, after announcing plans to eliminate five per cent of its “lowest performers”.
