Beyoncé once said: “If you liked it, then you shoulda put a ring on it”. There’s a reason why she didn’t specify that the ring must be expensive—it doesn’t need to be.

Oh, and of course, because the phrase wouldn’t be as catchy if she also had to put “expensive” in there.

“If It’s Less Than S$10K, I Don’t Want”

On Saturday (13 May), the TikTok influencer @missonglai posted a video showing the influencer doing her skincare routine while discussing her biggest regret.

The 59-second clip starts with her stating upfront that her biggest regret was wanting to be proposed to with an expensive engagement ring.

Heng ah, at least she didn’t ask for a Lamborghini.

She continued by sharing what she expected: “If it’s less than $10,000, I don’t want, then if it’s less than don’t-know-how-many-carat, I don’t want.”

At this point, just buy a cheese ring or an onion ring lah.

Despite her previous sky-high demands for an expensive engagement ring, she shared that now that she has it, she rarely wears it.

In the two years the influencer has had the ring, she’s worn it only a maximum of twenty times.

In the comments, she clarified that this was because of how mafan it was to keep the ring on. Not only would the influencer constantly knock into the ring, but she also dreaded having to remove the ring every time she showered.

The ring is probably still in good condition—perhaps she could try getting a refund or selling it on Carousell.

Acquaintances Knee-Deep in Debt Due to Expensive Engagement Ring

The influencer then shares that she knows acquaintances who had to resort to extreme means to buy an expensive engagement ring to propose to their partners.

Some resorted to borrowing money from their parents, while others are now in debt, all thanks to an engagement ring.

I guess you could say they’re suffer-ring.

She then urged her female viewers to reconsider their expectations for an expensive engagement ring, adding: “You think what, so cheap ah?”

At this point, she revealed that her engagement ring cost about $8,000. She later clarified in the comments that the diamond on her ring was lab-grown.

The influencer also noted that diamond rings lose most of their monetary value upon purchase.

The only value left is sentimental value and the value in using your ring to hao lian.

Regardless, she notes that even showing off your ring grows old. After you’re done with hao lian-ing, your expensive engagement ring again serves no purpose other than sitting on your finger.

She then wrapped up the TikTok by once again urging her viewers not to make the same mistake she did.

“Girls, don’t be like that lah,” she adds in Mandarin.

She’s right, you know. Perhaps we should make it a new norm to propose using ring pops from the mama shop instead.

The influencer celebrated her first wedding anniversary this year on New Year’s Day.

In her wedding anniversary Instagram post, she included several sweet photos of her and her spouse.

In one of the pictures, we even see the $8,000 ring she’s been talking about.

Well, as the influencer herself said, thankfully, her spouse didn’t leave her after she requested an expensive engagement ring.
