Ever since the start of the pandemic, we have been reciting the daily mantra, “it’s better to be safe rather than sorry”

Giving in to our temptations at the expense of our friends will result in inconveniences and rants.

A Gathering Gone Wrong

The story begins last Sunday (6 Feb) with a get-together at a friend’s place. Jason Yu was amongst his group of friends when one of them mentioned their close contact with a COVID-19 positive person.

According to Yu’s Tiktok video—which has garnered 586,800 views—the group was unaware of this news before meeting up.

While clad in a blue and white striped shirt, Yu recounted his uncomfortable experience at the gathering. He mentioned, “While we were all eating, one of my friends just mentioned that his girlfriend is COVID-positive and that he lives with this [said] girlfriend in the same room.”

When questioned by the group about whether he took precautions, the friend simply said “no”.  Bothered by the lack of social responsibility on his friend’s part, he espoused, “he very possibly could [have been] carrying COVID to my friend’s place, infecting everyone there.”

Not Out to “Cancel” Friend

While his recount may have come across to some as a way to call out his friend’s irresponsible actions, this was certainly not his intention.

In another Tiktok video on 8 Feb, he highlighted, “ I purposely did not name anyone because I’m not out here to cancel my friend.”

This came as a response to comments like “they’ll know you’re talking about them,” as well as “[the friend] deserves to be called out.”

Instead, he hopes his video will help “emphasise the importance of us staying safe and not propelling the spread of COVID.”

In response, Tiktok users were supportive of his actions.

As a result of his friend’s actions, Yu has been self-isolating in his room to reduce the possibility of further propagating the virus to his family—even though his Antigen Rapid Test results are negative.

He also posted a third video showing his delivered dinner at his room’s doorstep.

Let’s heed his advice and do the right thing.
