A 49-year-old man was arrested for allegedly slashing a 59-year-old man with a penknife at a Toa Payoh HDB void deck on National Day. The incident occurred after the two men had been drinking together at a nearby coffee shop.
National Day Drinking Session Turns Violent at Toa Payoh Block
Police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received a call for assistance at Block 168 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh on 9 Aug 2025 at around 8:30pm. The 59-year-old victim was conveyed conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

An eyewitness told Lianhe Zaobao that he initially saw the two men sitting with another couple at the coffee shop. The men later left their table and went to a nearby HDB block.
Sometime afterwards, a woman frantically went to the coffee shop toilet to get tissues. The victim was found sitting on the ground with an apparent wound on his head.
“A woman helped to call the police and an ambulance. There was blood everywhere on the ground. It was terrifying,” the eyewitness said.
Police Investigation and Arrest Details at Toa Payoh Scene
The 49-year-old suspect was arrested for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon. Police seized a penknife as a case exhibit.
A video posted to social media showed several police officers below the HDB block, along with police vehicles and an ambulance.
A group of people dressed in red T-shirts were gathered in the area.
A police cordon was set up along a pathway leading to the coffee shop at the void deck. The eyewitness suspected the men started arguing over drinks and decided to “settle the matter” elsewhere.
Police investigations are ongoing.
