Boon Lay Market is a treasure trove of excellent local hawker fare. Not only are the food deliciously Singaporean, it is also very cheap.

We all know the super famous Power Nasi Lemak, let’s look at the other treasures we can find there.

BBQ Seafood

The stall is shared with a wanton man who operates in the day. It may look small, but Singaporean wisdom tells us to never judge a food by the appearance of the stall.

This stall sells fresh and perfectly roasted seafood at ridiculously low prices that seldom exceed $20, something that is on the verge of extinction in Singapore.

Despite the long queue, the fast and no chit-chat hawkers will make sure you orders arrives fast (just like Power Nasi Lemak). Furthermore, rice here is free. Seriously.

Boon Lay Satay

This stall starts operating before dinner time, and serves satay that’s so damn good. It is one of the few stalls in Singapore that still make pork satay, grilled to perfection with just the right amount of fat that melts in your mouth. The satay sauce is also very strong and concentrated, perfect for soft satay.

And they also sell bbq cuttlefish and tau pok. A good place to have beer with your friends. However, you better go early because the queue is really long. Worst still, it might sell out by 9pm.

Ho Huat Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee

It is a sin to leave Hokkien Mee out whenever we are talking about good food because Singaporeans are just so mysteriously talented at cooking them. We find good Hokkien Mee everywhere, and tongues have become rather picky when we come to this mouthwatering dish.

However, even the harshest of critics will have to admit that the Hokkien Mee here is good. It may not be the best (come on, who can beat Toa Payoh at this), but it’s certainly good. After all, it’s in the “Top 10 Favourite Fried Prawn Mee”, no?

Local Cuisine

So be misled by its name: tt’s a roast meat stall, so you can find chicken rice, duck rice, charsiew rice, all sorts of rice or noodles here. This place has a wide variety of roasted meat to choose from. You get a good size portion for $2.50, with a hearty serving of rice and generous slices of meat. For $3 you get even more. The gravy from this stall stands out, which tastes great regardless what meat you choose.

Boon Lay Garden Drink Stall

No hawker experience is complete without a big mug of sugarcane juice. This stall sells a huge mug at $1.20 which is cheap by today’s standards. You get a big mug of pure sugarcane juice. No water or sugar bullshit added. You can also choose to add lime or lemon to make it even better (which we highly suggest).

Heng Huat Duck Noodles

Armed with a really very HUAT name, this breakfast stall is sure to make your day HUAT if you go there for breakfast. It opens in the morning, and is so popular that it usually will finish its day at 10-11.30AM! The queues never lie!

I. Mohamed Ismail Food Stall

Coined one of the best prata in the west, this stall is very popular among the writers in Goody Feed. We don’t mind having to queue the next time we eat there as we feel it is an obligation to share good crispy prata with fellow Singaporeans. Time to make your very own journey to the west!

Drink stall beside Power Nasi Lemak

They make awesome teh tarik, serious. If you’re not drinking sugarcane, you better get one of this, if not you’ll regret it. Or you can drink both. Then you can die of happiness (coz the number of calories is…crazy).
