ICA Predicts Heavy Traffic at Singapore Checkpoints During March Holidays and Hari Raya

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has warned of heavy traffic at Singapore’s Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints during the upcoming March school holidays and Hari Raya Puasa long weekend.

Travellers are advised to prepare for delays and plan their journeys accordingly.

Anticipated Heavy Traffic During Peak Periods

Heavy traffic is expected from 14 March to 24 March 2025, coinciding with the school holidays, and again from 28 March to 1 April for the Hari Raya Puasa celebrations.

These periods are projected to see significant increases in traveller numbers, similar to the recent Chinese New Year rush when over three million crossings were recorded.

On peak days during that period, more than 521,000 travellers crossed the checkpoints, with some car travellers facing waits of up to three hours due to tailbacks from Malaysian immigration.

ICA’s Recommendations for Travellers

To minimise disruptions, ICA has issued several recommendations.

Firstly, travellers must ensure their passports have at least six months of validity. Permanent residents renewing their passports should transfer their Re-Entry Permits to the new documents.

Meanwhile, motorists should check traffic conditions before departure via platforms such as ICA’s social media channels or the Land Transport Authority’s One Motoring website.

In addition, drivers are urged to maintain lane discipline and avoid queue cutting, which can worsen congestion. Errant motorists will be turned away and required to re-queue.

Alternatively, travellers are encouraged to consider cross-border bus services or use QR codes for faster clearance at automated lanes in bus halls.

Controlled and Prohibited Items

ICA reminded travellers not to bring prohibited or controlled items such as weapons, imitation tobacco products, or certain food items like bak kwa.

Vehicle Entry Requirements

Drivers of foreign vehicles must ensure their Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) is valid.

Vehicles without a valid Autopass card, VEP approval email from LTA, or insurance will be denied entry. Additionally, motorists with outstanding fines may also face entry restrictions.

Cooperation with ICA Officers

ICA has emphasised the importance of cooperating with officers at checkpoints.

Travellers are urged to follow instructions and observe traffic rules. The authority has stated that it will take firm action against those who violate regulations or commit offences at the checkpoints.
