Large Tree Fell in Ulu Pandan CC, Injuring 3 People

With Singapore being full of trees and lush greenery, it’s inevitable that the health of some trees may fall through the cracks and, well, fall.

A large tree in Ulu Pandan Community Club at Ghim Moh Road fell and trapped two people under it last evening (20 August).

SCDF Launched Rescue Operation

The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted to this incident at about 5:55pm. There were two people trapped underneath the tree, with a third person found injured near it.

According to the SCDF, the rescuers had to lower themselves down a steep slope, and made their way through some vegetation to reach the site of the incident. It would appear that the tree had rolled down the slope when it fell.

Emergency medical specialists were there to monitor the victims’ vital signs while the tree was being cut. Additionally, K9 search dogs were there to check the scene for any other victims.

All three victims were sent to the National University Hospital while conscious and in stable condition. The three were passers-by who just so happened to be at the wrong place and wrong time.

Not Sure Why The Tree Fell

Ulu Pandan CC’s spokesman said that they are still working to establish the facts of the incident. Holland-Bukit Timah GRC MP Christopher de Souza has shared that a professional arborist will assess the tree’s health and provide more information on why the incident happened.

The Straits Times have revealed that the fallen tree is an African Mahogany, which was introduced to Singapore in the late 1970s. You can often see them along the expressways, with their thick trunks and buttress roots.

These trees can grow up to 60m tall.

Not The First Tree Incident in Singapore

With Singapore being a garden city, we’ve had our fair share of tree-related incidents.

Earlier this year in February, a man was pinned in the driver’s seat after a tree fell on his car and impaled his windscreen.

In November 2021, a 20m tree fell in Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and nearly hit a jogger. There is of course one case that many might remember, where a tree that fell in Marsiling Park killed a woman in February 2021.
