Unexplained Explosion Sound and Tremors Rock Parts of Malaysia; Second Time in Eight Months

Residents across Ipoh in Malaysia reported hearing a loud boom and feeling tremors at around 10:30am on 18 Jun 2025.

The mysterious phenomenon affected multiple areas including Chemor, Chepor and Tanah Hitam.

Loud Explosion-Like Sound and Tremors Rock Multiple Areas in Ipoh

Mohammad Danial Nordin, a 36-year-old resident of Klebang Harmoni, was at home when he experienced the incident. “It sounded like someone slamming a door very hard and there was shaking at the same time,” he said.

Social media users from the affected areas also claimed to have felt it. The sound is said to have resembled an explosion and was accompanied by noticeable tremors across the district.

Authorities Rule Out Earthquakes and Quarry Blasting

Ipoh District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad confirmed that police are investigating public complaints regarding the sound and tremor. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin will issue an official statement if there is any confirmed information or report regarding the incident.

The Perak Minerals and Geoscience Department stated that quarry blasting did not cause the sounds. Quarry blasting operations are only scheduled from 12pm to 5pm on weekdays. The incident occurred at 10:30am, outside these designated hours.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department confirmed that no seismic activity was recorded in Ipoh during the time of the incident.

Identical Phenomenon Occurred Eight Months Earlier

On 21 Oct 2024 at 11:06am, the same mysterious phenomenon struck various parts of Ipoh. A strong tremor was felt in Tasek, Perak Stadium, Meru, Falim, Manjoi, Chemor and Sungai Siput, followed by a loud boom.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay previously stated that the source of the booming sound and tremor in the October incident remained a mystery.
