Trump-Kim Second Summit Might Take Place in S’pore Again in Jan or Feb

No, my fair ladies and gentlemen, you didn’t read the headline wrong.

Back in June last year, Singapore made history. Not for being the most kiasu country in the last 100 years. Not for being so obsessed with salted egg sauce they created goddamn Salted Egg burgers. But because of the whole Trump-Kim summit.

Which went well, thankfully

But if you thought that we’re safe, that NSmen would not be activated again…

Your worst fears might not have come to pass.

For according to Straits Times, the second Trump-Kim summit is happening soon.

And Singapore might be hosting it once again.

Shortlist

In a statement released on Thursday (10 Jan), South Korean Foreign Affairs Ministry officials have expressed that Singapore and Vietnam are likely to be shortlisted, in their ongoing search for a host for the second summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and United States President Donald Trump.

“(The venues you should pay attention to) are those mentioned by media including Vietnam, Singapore and Hawaii,” one ministry official said on condition of anonymity.

“But Hawaii is said to be an unrealistic location, as it doesn’t have a North Korean embassy there,” another official added.

As it is, the meeting site for the second summit has been drawing steady attention, a notion fueled by the fact that South Korean President Moon Jae-in had said on Thursday; that the summit will be taking place soon.

Mr Trump himself confirmed the statement, saying that the US was “negotiating a location” and that he expected the summit to take place in January or February.

Which, if you’ve not lost your mind recently, means it’s either this month or next month.

But there might be a dark horse in the running

For according to Straits Times, the South Korean government has wished for the meeting to be held in Panmunjom, the truce village in the Demilitarised Zone that divides the Korean peninsula. Previously, Mr Kim and Mr Moon had conducted their first summit there on 27 April 2018 when they shook hand and created history.

However, it might be a distinct improbability.

“We would like to hold the meeting at Panmunjom, but the probability of this becoming a reality seems to be slim,” one of the officials said.

Meanwhile, North Korea has embassies in Vietnam and Singapore and can run a team to prepare for the envisioned summit with Trump.

And earlier on Tuesday, CNN reported that White House scouting teams have visited Bangkok, Hanoi and Hawaii to see whether the locations are appropriate for the meeting.

Well, maybe there’s not a need to scout Singapore because they’ve done it once and realised that our chicken rice is really lit?

So what next?

We all know what happened the previous time. Trump and Kim met up. They shook hands. They left the country. They said it was a good one.

Fortunate for the rest of us, I’m sure.

But hey, like a wise old man once said: “Nothing is certain.”

So should, should, Singapore accommodate the summit once again, I feel like we would have a serial need to clasp our hands together, look towards the sky and hope:

“Damn, I hope they’ll not hold it in Yishun or something ‘coz I’m missing my Chong Pang Nasi Lemak.”

Although if there’s one thing for sure, it’s that the active Reservist units should probably ready up.

Cos defence and everything.
