Pakistan has formally recommended US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his “decisive diplomatic intervention” during the escalating violence between India and Pakistan earlier this year.

“Pivotal Leadership”

The government praised Trump for his “pivotal leadership” in May when cross-border strikes marked the worst regional fighting between the two nuclear-armed nations since 1971.

The violence killed dozens and raised fears of a wider war.

Islamabad and New Delhi agreed to a US-brokered truce on 10 May 2025, as a final burst of strikes hit parts of the disputed Kashmir region. Both countries claim full sovereignty over the territory.

“At a moment of heightened regional turbulence, President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi,” Pakistan’s government said in a statement on 21 Jun 2025.

The US president helped in “averting a broader conflict between the two nuclear states that would have had catastrophic consequences for millions of people in the region and beyond,” the statement added.

Trump Claims He Deserves Multiple Nobel Prizes

Trump responded to questions about the Nobel Prize on 20 Jun 2025, stating he should be awarded it for various reasons.

He cited his work on India-Pakistan relations and his role in arranging a treaty set to be signed on 23 June 2025 to end hostilities between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda.

The US President claimed he should have received the prize four or five times previously.

“They should give me the Nobel Prize for Rwanda, and if you look—the Congo, or you could say Serbia, Kosovo, you could say a lot of them,” Trump said.

Diplomatic Accounts Differ on Truce Implementation Process

Indian and Pakistani officials provided contradictory accounts of how the truce agreement was reached. Islamabad praised the White House’s involvement in the negotiations.

New Delhi downplayed American involvement, presenting the ceasefire as a victory and claiming that the neighbours “directly” collaborated on the truce without significant external mediation.

Governments, institutions and certain individuals can nominate any living person or active organization for the Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee decides the winner each year.

Trump has consistently presented himself as a global peacemaker throughout his political career. Before his second term, he criticized predecessor President Joe Biden’s failed attempts to negotiate an end to Israel’s campaign in Gaza following the Hamas-led 7 Oct 2023 attacks and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

A new conflict has emerged in the Middle East after Israel launched mass strikes on Iran on 13 Jun 2025, prompting retaliatory attacks from Tehran. The week-long conflict has resulted in significant casualties.

More than 400 people have died in Iran, according to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB. In Israel, at least 24 people have been killed, according to the Israeli government.

Israel says the attacks target nuclear sites and high-ranking military officers, several of whom have been killed. Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes on northern and southern Israel.

Trump set a two-week deadline earlier this week to decide on US military involvement in Iran.

After meeting with a top EU official and foreign ministers from Britain, France and Germany in Geneva, Switzerland, on 20 Jun 2025, Iran’s foreign minister said his country would not re-enter negotiations with the US while under attack from Israel.
