If you’re a driver or learning to be one, you’re probably familiar with defensive driving, the practice of driving in a manner that reduces the chances of an accident or collision.
This includes keeping a safe distance from the car in front of you and not going too fast.
But even if you take all these precautionary measures, there are just some things that you’ll never be able to account for.
Like a large tyre hurtling towards your car.
Large Tyre Flies Off Heavy Vehicle, Hits a Car & Bounces on the PIE
A video of a large tyre falling off a heavy vehicle and slamming into a car has been making the rounds on social media.
Footage of the incident was first shared on the Facebook group ROADS.sg yesterday (28 Nov).
It is believed to have taken place on the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) on Saturday (27 Nov) at around 1:42pm.
In the 44-second video, the car recording the incident on its dashcam can be seen travelling on the rightmost lane of the expressway.
At the five-second mark, a loud thud can be heard – the sound of something falling to the ground – but the source of the sound cannot yet be discerned.
Three seconds later, we see a black car in the middle lane hit a large tyre that is believed to have fallen off a heavy vehicle ahead of its on the left lane.
The tyre then bounces five more times, on the middle and right lanes, as well as the grass patch lining the road divider, before landing on the rightmost lane, obstructing traffic.
The voice of a young child could be heard in the camcar asking: “What happened, mama?”.
A witness later shared an account of what occurred with ROADS.sg.
“A fallen tyre from a heavy vehicle hitting the black car just travelling behind it. The tyre then continue flying in front of my car and landed on lane 1,” he said.
The witness warned that there’s a very real risk of a falling tyre on the highway, and said he’s still shaken by the incident.

Back in 2017, a woman was killed by a flying tyre in Perak, Malaysia.
The victim was in the garden of her own house when a tyre broke loose from a large vehicle and struck her. Sadly, the forceful impact caused the woman to die on the spot.
The tyre was so large that it required more than six men to load it onto a police lorry.
