Some residents reported hearing an explosion during the incident. Ms Ng, a resident, said her flat experienced a blackout at about 11:45pm.

Ms Ng told CNA that she remained calm as she could not see flames, only large clouds of smoke coming from the coffeeshop area. She added that sirens were already audible before the explosion occurred.

Mr Zulkifli was in his kitchen when he detected smoke. He reported that when he went downstairs, no fire was visible initially. The situation then escalated from a small fire to a larger blaze, followed by an explosion that caused the entire block to lose power.

Residents at Touch Ubi hostel were also evacuated. The residential training hostel for adults with mild intellectual disabilities is located near the coffee shop.
