Sure, we say that we love our country every National Day. But do you love your country enough to sacrifice yourself for it?

This Ukrainian soldier is the epitome of “country before self”, as he sacrificed himself to earn Ukraine more time to prepare against Russian tanks. Here’s what happened.

Blow Up Bridge To Slow Down Russian Tanks

Vitaly Skakun Volodymyrovych was stationed at Henichesk bridge in the Kherson region. This bridge was one of the entry points from Crimea, which Russia annexed back in 2014.

There was a standoff with Russian forces, and Ukrainian forces decided to blow up the bridge to fight off Russian tanks. Skakun ended up being the person tasked to blow it up.

He got in touch with his fellow soldiers, saying that he was going to blow up the bridge. Immediately after his message, there was an explosion.

Skakun died immediately, as he could not get away from the bridge in time.

Plans To Award Him with Posthumous Honours

Skakun’s sacrifice was not in vain, as he gave his fellow comrades precious time to regroup and deploy defences. This helped to slow down the advancement of Russian troops.

The Ukrainian armed forces said that they plan to award him with posthumous honours for his sacrifice. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine shared his story on Facebook:

Ukraine’s deputy minister of foreign affairs had also called Skakun’s actions “heroic” on Twitter:

 Ukrainian Forces Not Backing Down

Ukrainian forces had also blown up another bridge near the capital Kyiv on Friday, in an attempt to cut off a route for Russian tanks to enter the city.

These operations came on the second day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The invasion halted temporarily when there were rumours of Putin being ready to start diplomatic negotiations. But that never happened and the invasion continued.
