A woman was caught on surveillance video allegedly stealing a $49 rice cooker from an electronics shop while using her handbag and umbrella to hide the rice cooker she stole.

The incident took place around 7 PM on 6 May 2025 at an electronics store located at Block 728, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6.

Shop Owner Discovers Missing Item Days Later

The electronics store owner, Lin Yaxuan (name transliterated from Mandarin), 75, revealed that there were four other employees in the shop at the time of the incident.

As the store displays fans, kettles, and other merchandise outside, staff members usually move in and out of the shop.

Ms Lin said the woman, who was carrying a bag and an umbrella, spent over ten minutes in the store on the day of the theft.

“The staff asked her several times if she needed help, but she said she was ‘just looking.’ After wandering between the shelves, she left,” Ms Lin explained.

A few days later, while restocking inventory, Ms Lin noticed a rice cooker missing from the shelf, though its packaging box remained.

Upon checking the CCTV footage, she discovered the woman had allegedly stolen the $49 rice cooker.

Shop Takes Extra Precautions Following Incident

According to video footage provided by Ms Lin, the woman walked out of the store carrying a white rice cooker, an umbrella, and a bag, with the umbrella and bag apparently used to hide the stolen item.

“I decided to report it to the police,” Ms Lin said.

She also hopes the woman will return to pay for the item. “If she’s facing difficulties, we could sell it to her at a discount. I just want to recover my cost.”

Ms Lin has since become more vigilant and now ties some products together with rope to prevent theft.

“This can serve as a deterrent. Hopefully, thieves won’t be able to steal multiple items at once. But it’s really impossible to prevent everything. You never know who might steal.”

Police confirmed they received a report about the incident. The case is still under investigation.
