Uncle Selling Tissue Outside Temple Accused of Indecent Acts & Scolding Customers

Among the vibrant sea of red and yellow New Moon abalone umbrellas along Waterloo Street sits an uncle selling tissues who has courted some controversy.

He was accused of acting indecently and even scolding customers. However, he has something to say about that.

Uncle Selling Tissue Outside Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple Accused of Immodest and Rude Conduct

Our man of the hour is Lin Qiusong (hanyu pinyin), a 73-year-old who sells tissues and sweets outside the famous Waterloo Street temple, Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple.

You know, the street filled with uncles and aunties sitting under the distinct New Moon umbrellas, offering everything from pocket tissues to fortune-telling services.

With how lively the street is, it’s the perfect place to film a video for the Wes Anderson TikTok trend.

According to Shin Min Daily News, several accusations were made against Lin by templegoers and his fellow kakis selling tissues along the same street.

Ah, beef between tissue sellers… If it isn’t a uniquely Singaporean problem.

The 73-year-old was accused of public indecency and scolding customers who refused to buy tissues from him.

We’d say it’s pretty impressive—it’s not easy being a public spectacle and a business all at once.

According to Shin Min Daily News, Lin was accused of touching himself immodestly and sometimes being topless, which templegoers condemned as inappropriate, especially outside a place of worship.

We’re just surprised he hasn’t been STOMP-ed yet.

Walk a Mile in the 73-Year-Old’s Shoes

However, Lin denies allegations of his rude conduct.

This is Lin’s side of the story: He does not scold customers who refuse to buy from him. Instead, he merely has a loud voice which can be mistaken as him raising his voice at others.

He shares that he gets his blaring voice from his father, who used to perform in the Chinese Opera.

We don’t think the influencer Koh Boon Ki will be very happy with this explanation—it doesn’t sound very scientific, does it?

Even if Lin isn’t rude to customers, he’s still accused of disrespecting the other tissue sellers outside the temple. One particular tissue seller shared that Lin constantly quarrels with the other tissue sellers, adding that Lin had even cursed her to death once.

As for being topless, the 73-year-old shared that he only takes off his shirt when the weather is too hot.

Perhaps the uncle should sell ice packs or USB fans instead of tissues.

Selling Tissues Without A License; Suspects Other Sellers Along the Street Are Jealous

The street outside Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho temple may be a sea of red and yellow, but it doesn’t mean people there can’t be green with jealousy.

Lin claims other tissue sellers along the street are jealous of his good business.

Perhaps his business does well only because he scolds customers who refuse to buy his tissues. Regardless, we’ll never know the truth of the matter.

The 73-year-old also shared that in the past three months that he’s been selling tissues outside the temple, he’s been doing so without a license.

Maybe the unlicensed roasted chestnut uncle fined $27.6K earlier this month should have sold his chestnuts outside this temple.

Tissue Sellers Get Into Fight Over “Territory” Outside Temple

This isn’t the first time tissue sellers outside the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho temple have almost bit each other’s heads off.

Last December, two tissue sellers fought outside the temple over their “territory”.

Apparently, one of the two sellers, a 60-year-old lady, has been selling tissue at the same spot for almost a decade.

This isn’t her grandfather’s road; it’s hers.

However, last October, an uncle suddenly set up shop right behind her spot and would even swear at her when customers refused to buy his tissues.

Tensions eventually boiled over, and they broke out into a fight.
