Announced in 2015, the road project was initially set for completion in 2019, but was ultimately delayed due to various factors, including the recent coronavirus pandemic.

Six years down the road, however it seems that the move, which is intended to ease jams near Jalan Anak Bukit, has finally come to fruition.

According to The Straits Timesthe new 400m city-bound, three-lane road between Jalan Jurong Kechil and Clementi Road has been successfully constructed, thus paving the way for more motorists without the fear of congestion.

The road offers an alternative way to the city, and would also pass by popular locations such as Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre and Bukit Timah Plaza.

Most importantly, it would help to direct traffic away from the usually congested Jalan Anak Bukit and Jalan Jurong Kechil intersection.

It should be noted, however, that minor road works will persist till the third quarter of this year.

While these works are being conducted, traffic marshals will be stationed at the affected areas, alongside signs to warn incoming motorists.

The route of several bus services will also be amended to reflect changes in the road.

Announcement

On Monday (29 Mar), Ms Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information and National Development, teased the official opening of the major road project.

And a day later, she confirmed everyone’s suspicions.

“Many of our residents would have noticed that the stretch of Upper Bukit Timah Road near Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre, Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary School and Bukit Timah Plaza will be transformed to a dual carriageway come April 2,” she wrote on her Facebook page.

“This is a major change for the neighbourhood.”

Improvised maps were also attached to the post, alongside a notice of all present and impending changes to the road.

We were also treated to a closer look at the enhanced road, less than 48 hours before it is officially opened.

Netizens have since commended the move, with some expressing their appreciation for the reduced commuting time to their destinations.
