Upset Patient Called Doctor ‘Stupid’ & ‘Crazy’ for not Giving Her Antibiotics; Patient Also Hit and Attempted to Bit Officers that Escorted Her Out

The emergency rooms of hospitals are probably amongst the world’s most eventful and interesting rooms.

Doctors and nurses running around administering emergency treatment to patients, family members sitting beside their loved ones praying for them, the occasional child running around like it’s a playground while their guardians chase after them – it’s a place of utterly human interaction.

Sometimes, there’s even patients who cause trouble thinking they’re not here to get treated by the doctors, but to treat them – badly – instead.

Patient Insults Doctor For Not Prescribing Antibiotics

Wang Xuyi, a 53-year-old woman, faces four charges in court including deliberately wounding others and insulting public service personnel.

This follows her run-in with doctors and police officers in the emergency department of Changi General Hospital last year on 16 May during the circuit breaker period.

Why? It’s only because the doctor didn’t want to prescribe her antibiotics and let her go on her way after that.

The case, which remained open a few days ago, is still ongoing as the woman has yet to plead guilty to the accusations.

Testifying in court, female doctor Dr Hong recounted the woman coming into the hospital at about 6 pm that evening for consultation.

Dr Hong didn’t disclose the patient’s condition, but stated that she believed the patient required blood tests and X-ray examinations.

Wang refused to undergo such treatment on the grounds of having just completed these “tests” a few weeks ago, requesting for the doctor to prescribe her antibiotics instead.

Dr Hong then told her that based on her professional judgement, antibiotics were not what she needed but a detailed examination instead.

Yes… Or No

This is where it all started to go downhill.

Dr Hong spent 30 minutes convincing the patient, to which the patient finally agreed to undergo the checks after that.

However, 45 minutes later, Wang started to regret her decision and wanted out again. So Dr Hong called in another senior doctor to talk to her instead.

Wang was told in the end by the senior doctor that if she didn’t want to be examined or to be hospitalised for it, she would have to sign a form giving up treatment before she could leave.

All seemed well when Dr Hong returned to the examination room, only to have Wang barge in at about 9 pm.

Disregarding the other patients around, she caused a commotion of wanting to leave the hospital yet refused to sign the form to leave.

Dr Hong had no choice but to agree to let her go, but when Wang closed the door she shouted, “stupid!”

This lady seemed to have a problem with making up her mind, because she once again told another staff that she was willing to be hospitalised not long after leaving the examination room.

Dr Hong then filled out the necessary documents needed to admit Wang into the hospital, and passed them to the nurses.

It’s really like watching a never-ending table tennis match with the ping pong ball going back and forth at this point, huh?

Wang still lingered around the counter, and at about 10 to 11 pm she began to cause another ruckus, saying that she didn’t want to be hospitalised – again.

Other doctors, nurses and Dr Hong herself had to appease Wang, but she yelled at Dr Hong for being “crazy”, reiterating that she only needed antibiotics and not hospitalisation.

Biting After Barking

That’s not all, unfortunately.

When Wang was being escorted by one male and two female police auxiliary officers in the emergency room, she suddenly became aggressive.

Wang hit the officers multiple times on the shoulder and attempted to bite them.

She was eventually subdued by the female officers.

Wang, who doesn’t have a lawyer representative, personally questioned Dr Hong about the remarks she made, asking if the doctor had been mistaken in what she heard.

After Dr Hong said that she heard the remarks clearly, Wang continued to ask her if anyone else had heard them, to which Dr Hong replied that other doctors and nurses were present when she called her “crazy”.

Wang might also be a master of self-sabotage, for she made a report to an investigator alleging that she had been assaulted by the police officers.

Taking the stand, the investigator revealed CCTV videos of Wang attacking the police officers and believed that it was the other way around instead.

Well, at least you know now that words have power – you can’t just yell insults at doctors even if they don’t give you what they want, yeah?
