US President Joe Biden recently unleashed a confusing statement recently: the US will defend Taiwan if China ever attacked them.
This statement set off the White House, causing others to wonder if his statement was a slip of the tongue.
Well, it was not.
Biden Says US Will Defend Taiwan if China Attacks Although US Have No Official Diplomatic Ties With Taiwan
President Biden “vows to protect Taiwan” at a CNN town hall event on 21 October 2021. This was a bold and shocking statement since the US does not have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan but it does sell arms to Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act.
This sparked rumours that there will be a change in the policy in the near future. However, the White House quickly debunked the rumours saying there would not be any change to their policy.
Additionally, President Biden added that there’s no need to worry about China being more powerful for the US have always been known to have the most powerful military in the world.
On the other hand, the US still practising the policy of “strategic ambiguity” on this issue AKA nothing is set in stone yet.
What is happening between China and Taiwan?
The military tensions between China and Taiwan have been rising recently. In fact, Taiwan’s Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng described the situation to be the worst in over 40 years.
Earlier this month, China sent about 150 warplanes into Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ). This started various speculations that China wants to invade Taiwan within the next few years to the next few decades.
Taiwan Defence Minister Chiu, warned that China will be fully capable to invade the island by 2025. Considering the size of mainland China and their army strength there, this is terrifying news to hear if you are a Taiwan resident
Why Does China Want to Attack Taiwan?
This is because China wants to realise “reunification” with Taiwan even if it is “by force.” Beijing’s “one-China principle” declares its claims over Taiwan.
It claims that Taiwan is merely a break-away province of one China instead of Taiwan being an independent. This lead to many people all over the world googling this question: Is Taiwan part of China?
TL;DR China wants Taiwan back so they shall concur.
