While it seems like we already know all that COVID-19 has to offer, it also seems like the virus constantly surprises us when we least expect it to.
While we’re on that note, what if I told you now that the Department of Energy in the United States of America (USA) recently released findings suggesting that the virus is not natural but came from a laboratory leak in China instead?
According to reports by the Wall Street Journal, this stand was published via a classified report by the office of the Director of National Intelligence in the USA, Avril Haines.
Prior to this, the US Department of Energy was “undecided” regarding the origin of COVID-19.
While it certainly is not the first time China has been accused of creating the virus, the accusation is still just as heavy because of what it implies.
Here’s what you need to know about the report published, as well as what other parties, such as the White House, have to say.
Made Decision With “Low Confidence”, But Decision is Still Important
According to those who had access to the classified report, the Department allegedly took the stand that they did with “low confidence”.
In particular, the report referred to how many parties are still unable to come to a consensus regarding how COVID-19 originated.
And while the phrase “low confidence” might not sound extremely convincing to you, here’s why it’s still important nonetheless.
Apart from indicating a switch in the Department’s stand on COVID-19, it is also crucial as the Department is in charge of its own network of national laboratories. Some of them carry out their own advanced biological research as well.
Aside from the Department of Energy’s belief that COVID-19 originated from a Chinese lab leak, the Federal Bureau of Investigation also announced previously that they support the same stand.
Other Parties Still Have Yet to Come to a Consensus
As for other agencies in the USA, four of the intelligence agencies in the country are of the belief that COVID-19 was caused by “natural transmission”, based on the Journal’s reports.
On the other hand, two agencies are still undecided.
The White House confirmed this yesterday (26 February) when White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan revealed to CNN that the intelligence agencies in the USA have yet to come to a consensus about the issue.
WHO Still Trying to Find Origins of COVID-19
As for the progress in finding how COVID-19 came about, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced in February that it will take all possible actions “until [they] get the answer” on how COVID-19 originated.
WHO also debunked the rumour that it had stopped investigating the origin of COVID-19.
