We’ve been eating youtiao since we were young. With rojak sauce, with porridge, with bak kut teh, and even eating it alone just like that so we’re pretty used to the dough sticks which looks like a giant d**k according to some netizens in the west.
But hey, guess what? This giant dough stick has gained hipster status in the west and, well, plenty of netizens were wondering whether they’re totally cool wit it or not.
And don’t worry, it’s completely different from the Ice-cream sandwich incident.
Youtiao, a Chinese Version of the Doughnut
On 17 November 2016, Dessert Insider released a video showcasing our very own Youtiao, or to be more specific, the Thai version where they eat it with condensed milk or honey. A stick of sugary goodness, they call it.
Netizens had mixed feelings about the video
Unfortunately, people who grew up with this delicious Youtiao were less than amused with their description.
Though to be fair, we guessed Desert Insider created this video to cater to the west so they might just be linking it to a food item that is familiar to them.
While some thought there were better ways to eat youtiao.
And we agree! How could you not like bak kut teh?! Just kidding.
And a food war was almost started.
Best comment of the day goes to…
Hipster yo.
And of course, being a Singaporean who takes a huge amount of pride (too much, sometimes), I just got to say this: It’s not a stick of sugary goodness. It’s a stick of sweet-saltish goodness.
