Before the Ministry of Health (MOH) released its report yesterday, records showed that seven COVID-19 patients had died from the disease this month alone.

All seven of them had not been vaccinated against the coronavirus, and most had underlying conditions.

So, when the ministry said yesterday (17 Aug) that a fully vaccinated man had died from COVID-19, it was certainly a shock, to say the least.

Here are the details:

First Fully Vaccinated COVID-19 Death Reported in S’pore: It is a 90YO Man

A 90-year-old man has become our eighth COVID-19 fatality in August after he passed away from COVID-19 complications yesterday (17 Aug).

The man had developed symptoms on 29 July and was detected when he was tested for COVID-19 on 1 August as part of community surveillance testing.

The following day, he developed shortness of breath and giddiness and was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital where he was admitted directly to the intensive care unit (ICU) for septic shock from COVID-19 pneumonia.

He had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but was “advanced in age and had a history of chronic kidney disease and hypertension,” MOH said.

A total of 45 COVID-19 patients have now succumbed to the disease.

52 Locally Transmitted Cases

52 locally transmitted cases were reported yesterday, of whom 14 were unlinked.

Another four imported infections were detected, three of whom were detected upon arrival. The remaining case developed the illness during their stay-home notice or isolation period.

No New Clusters; Dorm Cluster Grows

No new COVID-19 clusters were reported, but a few existing clusters grew yesterday.

13 infections were added to the Westlite Juniper Dormitory cluster, which now has 65 cases.

The Sengkang Bus Interchange staff cluster grew to 19 cases, as two new cases were linked to it yesterday.

The My First Skool cluster at Block 54 Chin Swee Road also had two additions, bringing its total to 36.

404 in Hospitals; 6 in ICU

At the moment, there are 404 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.

30 severe cases require oxygen supplementation, and six are in critical condition in the ICU.

Of the 36 cases, 31 are seniors above 60 years who have fallen very ill; among them, six are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination Progress: 76%

As of Monday, 76% of our population has been vaccinated, while 82% have received at least one dose.

This includes 83,968 recipients of other vaccines recognised in the World Health Organization’s Emergency Use Listing.

More importantly, our vaccination rate for those in the older age groups is increasing.
