According to Malaysia’s national coordinating minister for COVID-19 immunisation Khairy Jamaluddin on Tuesday (13 July), 204 workers at a vaccination centre in the Malaysian state of Selangor have tested positive for COVID-19

The cases were detected after all 453 workers at the centre went for mass testing.

Here’s what happened.

Over 200 People in a Vaccination Centre in M’sia Tested Positive for COVID-19

The vaccination centre, which is located at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC), was closed for cleaning and disinfection yesterday (13 July).

Based on the results of the mass testing, the positive cases had a low viral load, likely because around 88% of the workers had already been vaccinated.

According to Mr Khairy, the series of infections at the IDCC vaccination centre was the first that had involved a “mega vaccination centre”.

Mr Khairy said that the high number of COVID-19 cases in the Klang Valley made it difficult for authorities to confirm whether an infection had occurred in IDCC or in another location.

He also affirmed that all workers at the vaccination centre will be replaced as a precautionary measure to minimise the possibility of infection.

In addition, individuals who went to get vaccinated at the IDCC vaccination centre between 9 July and 12 July have been advised to self-quarantine for ten days and take a COVID-19 test if they experience any symptoms.

After the closure of the vaccination centre, 6,000 vaccination appointments were postponed, with notifications being sent out through SMS and social media.

Malaysia’s national COVID-19 immunisation task force was told to go to the IDCC yesterday to assist those who were unaware of the closure of the vaccination centre.

Mr Khairy said that the task force will continue to “step up efforts” to make sure that the IDCC vaccination centre is safe, and that the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health will keep an eye on the air quality at the centre.
