Val Kilmer, the iconic American actor known for his roles in blockbuster films such as Batman Forever and Top Gun, has died at the age of 65.

His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed to The New York Times that he passed away on Tuesday (1 April 2025), in Los Angeles due to pneumonia.

Acting Career

Kilmer’s career spanned several decades, during which he became one of Hollywood’s most recognisable faces. He rose to fame in the 1980s with his portrayal of Iceman in the 1986 hit Top Gun alongside Tom Cruise.

Throughout his career, Kilmer took on a variety of challenging roles.

He played Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s The Doors (1991) and portrayed the caped crusader in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever (1995).

Health Struggles and Comeback

In 2015, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer. The illness and subsequent treatment significantly affected his voice, requiring him to use a voice box to speak.

Despite his health challenges, Kilmer made a brief but memorable return to the big screen in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, reprising his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

Final Years and Legacy

In 2021, he released a documentary titled Val, which offered an intimate look at his life and career using footage he had recorded over four decades.
