Delivery Rider Has to Pay for His Own Repairs After Van Hit His Bike As Driver Isn’t Insured

Imagine this: you, a delivery driver, are having your breakfast before heading to work when suddenly, you hear a loud bang.

You discover that a motorist has slammed into your parked motorcycle and severely damaged it.

So, you head to your insurer, to collect money for the all the necessary repairs, but they refuse to pay you because the driver that hit your bike wasn’t insured.

Well, that’s exactly what happened to a few vehicle owners recently.

Delivery Rider Has to Pay for His Own Repairs After Van Hit His Bike As Driver Isn’t Insured

At around 6:30 am on 28 April, a rental van smashed into seven parked vehicles—four cars and three motorcycles—at an open space carpark in Boon Lay.

The sound of the crash woke up residents in Block 175 Boon Lay Drive.

One of the bike owners involved, delivery rider Muhamad Marofkhan Mahmood, discovered that his vehicle had suffered extensive damage that day.

These damages included a bent exhaust pipe, broken fairing, dented box rack, and leaking forks, amounting to around $500 in repairs, according to The Straits Times.

Unfortunately, his insurance company will not honour claims against the van driver as he had allegedly driven without a licence and was uninsured.

Mr Marofkhan is still able to ride his motorcycle to make deliveries, however, unlike another delivery rider in the same block.

Forced to Rent Bike for Work

Mr Muhammad Faiz, another rider who lives in the area, now rides a rental motorcycle to make his deliveries.

He had just eaten his breakfast and begun his Ramadan fasting that day when he heard a loud “bang”.

Mr Faiz believed the sound came from a garbage bin being dropped by a rubbish truck, but his father informed him that a crash had occurred at the sheltered driveway.

When he went down to have a look, he was shocked to find that his motorcycle had been pinned between a grey van and a pillar after the van slammed into it and a guard rail.

“I could see blood splatters on the driver’s side airbag which had been deployed,” he said.

With damage to his bike’s radiator, water impeller pump, and frame, Mr Faiz now has to fork out $1,500 in repairs.

“It’s not a small sum for me, but I have no choice but to pay first for the repairs,” he said. “I’m now forced to rent a small motorcycle for work.”

The van driver involved in the crash was later arrested and police investigations are ongoing.

Some lawyers have reportedly suggested that all the vehicle owners affected by the crash should band together and make a claim so they can share the legal fees.

But the aggrieved parties have yet to contact each other, Mr Faiz said.

This seems to be one of those unfortunate incidents where everyone loses.
