It’s kind of official guys (and ladies).
Vanness Wu, member of beloved Taiwanese boyband F4 and one-half of Korean Mandopop duo Kangta & Vanness (bet you didn’t know about this, do you?!), has called it quits with his wife of five years, Singaporean socialite Arissa Cheo.
And while that might no doubt come as a shock to some, others, like me, might have seen this coming since a long, long time. Like the 1990s, to be exact.
So what are the deets? Where’s the dirt?
We bring you just that.
Marriage from Hell
According to Jayne Stars, the union of Wu, 39, and Cheo, 35, was effectively one from “Hell”.
Barely a year after getting married, cracks began to materalise in their marriage, and I’m talking about pretty big ones.
For starters, both parties unfollowed each other on Instagram (OMG, HOW CAN?!), and they even posted cryptic messages online that did not exactly glorify their marriage.
Following that was a spate of events that did not exactly support the phrase ‘Love and marriage trumps over all‘, with the most recent one being Feb 2018 when the couple reportedly spent the lunar new year separately.
Singapore Law
Lest you’re unaware, under Singapore’s law, couples who wish to divorce each other can only do so under three coinciding criteria:
- The marriage will need to have at least reached three years
- In that same period of them, they need to live separately
- Following that, they have to provide a valid reason that both parties can agree on, in order to divorce successfully. Should one of the parties disagree, another year will be slapped on top of the existing three.
And according to reports, Wu and Cheo have been living separately for the last three years, with May 2018 having been the end of that tenure (three years; separated).
Wu then sent out divorce papers to Cheo, which she initially refused to sign because she disagreed with the reason for separation. But Wu persisted, this time sending another set of papers with the amended reasons being that she “did not support” his career and that the duo had “irreconcilable differences”.
And according to Toggle, it was then that Cheo decided “it’s now impossible for the pair to mend their ties.”
“My client has always believed in marriage,” Cheo’s lawyer said in a statement.
“However, because Vanness has sent her two divorce agreements successively, she no longer has a choice. She decided to stop living with suffering and hurt. She has decided to divorce.”
Breakdown of their marriage
Later on, Cheo’s close friend revealed the supposed five faults of Wu that led to the well-publicised breakdown of their marriage:
- Wu never returned home for special occasions
- Kept in close contact with other females
- Forking out money for flight tickets so that he won’t be alone during overseas work trips
- Stubbornly refuse to admit his faults during quarrels
- Has no qualms about lying in front of the media
This, however, was contradicted by another source’s claim.
“Arissa’s personality has always been more open,” a source revealed. “She enjoys partying through the night. Her life habits are incompatible with Vanness’.
“In the end, they separated. This doesn’t come as a surprise!”
Current affairs
Wu’s currently filming in Shanghai, China, and his most recent Instagram post is one of him and English actor Scott Adkins.
Cheo, on the other hand, last posted an #ootd pic some 17 days ago. Incidentally, comments on the post included ‘cheer up wishes’ from fans.
Well, I guess we can only wish them the best in their future (separate) endeavours.
