So you are going to have your wedding soon.
On one hand, you want to show off to the entire world that you can afford to order hundreds of shark fin soup for each and every of your guest. On the other hand, you feel the guilt because you already know what they are doing to the sharks for every bowl of shark fin soup consumed.
What do you do?
A new campaign against the purchase of shark fin saw Jay Chou, one of Asian’s Biggest Chinese celebrities speaking up against the trafficking and consumption of these species in English.
From an article in WildAid, they are hoping that Taiwan will once again set an example in banning ivory and the consumption of shark fin after their success with terminating rhino horn consumption.
“Evidence from mainland China shows a 50 to 70 percent reduction in shark fin consumption in recent years as a result of awareness campaigns and a ban on shark fin at government banquets, but Taiwan continues to both supply and consume significant amounts of shark fin.”
In the video, the King of Mandopop goes around the banquet hall clearing bowls of shark fin soup, educating the Chinese with health facts about consuming shark fin and ending it off with the tagline “Don’t Buy It”.
Even though Jay Chou is not fluent in speaking English, he has overcome many obstacles and language barriers when it comes to learning the language.
The pop star only mastered the language in 2011 for the movie, The Green Hornet and barely spoke a word of English before that. It took him one month to learn and memorize the lines in the show.
So if even Jay Chou asks you to not buy it, you better don’t buy it.
