We all have our fair share of hardship.
Maybe you didn’t do so well for your exams.
Maybe your girlfriend just dumped you for another dude.
Maybe if you’re a spoilt brat, your mum didn’t buy you the latest BTS concert ticket.
While problems are never easier simply because “someone else has it worse”, you could always look on the bright side.
At the end of the day, most of us still return to a safe, comfortable home and enjoy a warm dinner with our family.
At the end of the night, you slip in your soft bed after saying goodnight to your parents and fall asleep soundly.
That’s not a luxury that everyone has.
A video surfaced on Twitter a week ago to serve as a reminder of that fact.
A construction worker in Malaysia was recorded sitting on the curb alone, eating his pack of lunch as vehicles drove by.
Just imagine that that was your loved one, your heart will surely ache.
Imagine going to work as a construction worker in a foreign land to earn money for your family back home. You’d work under the hot sun every day doing hard labour.
But when you finally take a break from work, you won’t be heading to your office cafeteria.
In the tweet by @HakimieNoor, she wrote: “Ya Allah, I swear, it’s sad to watch him eating like that. Please appreciate the service of those who create and build opportunities for us. Not all men are useless.”
Indeed, these workers are abundant in Singapore just as they are overseas.
Hopefully, more can be done to ensure that these workers get to have a proper break.
In Singapore, we have the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) to cater to the welfare and wellbeing of foreign workers here.
Just last year, more than $500,000 in financial assistance was given to these workers. Most of these funds went towards emergency housing needs.
On another note, it’s important for us to be grateful for what we have and count our blessings.
Always look on the bright side of life
