Man Who Was Caught Taking Upskirt Videos Claimed He Was Testing the Quality of His Phone Camera
Abel Tan Yew Hong, 28, has been sentenced to 11 weeks in jail for taking upskirt videos of unsuspecting women.

He reportedly took videos of 10 women from 24 July 2019 to 10 September 2019, at an assortment of locations including Bedok MRT station and Suntec City.
He has reportedly “followed his victims on escalators, standing behind them and using his Sony Xperia mobile phone to record the videos”.
He has also proved persistent, following one victim up three escalators.
His crime spree came to a halt, however, when he was caught in the act on 10 September 2019.
Tan was swiftly taken to the MRT staff, who in turn informed the police.
Sentencing
In court, Deputy Public Prosecutor Goh Qi Shuen pushed for a sentence of 11 weeks.
On the other hand, Tan’s lawyer, Mr Marshall Lim, requested for a sentence of 10 weeks.
Mr Lim informed the court that Tan was a graduate from a local university, and that he had finished his master’s degree.

His client was also operating for a major international semiconductor company.
Mr Lim then went on to form his case, stating that his client had been intrigued by online upskirt videos and their seemingly differing qualities.
“To satisfy his curiosity as to why there was such a variance in the quality of the videos, our client instructs us that he took the unfortunate decision to try taking these videos for himself,” said Mr Lim.
“His intention was merely to experiment and to find out if his cellphone camera could take the high-quality videos he saw on the Internet.”
The defense lawyer added that Tan’s long-time girlfriend has also since forgiven him.

“She continues to stand by him and their plans to get married have not changed.”
But District Judge Adam Nakhodadistrict was not convinced.
“The accused was somewhat persistent in following victims up the escalators,” he said.
He ultimately agreed with the prosecution’s proposal.
Tan eventually pleaded guilty to three counts of insulting the modesty of a woman, and was sentenced to 11 week’s imprisonment.

He is currently out on bail of $5,000, and will return to police custody on 26 April.
Other Instances
Upskirt videos may be “experimental” in nature, but offending scientists should be aware of the consequences befalling such ‘experiments’.
In one case, it even ended in death.
Back in 2019, a 46-year-old man, Andrew Ho Chee Meng, was chased down and subsequently restrained after he was caught trying to take upskirt photos on an escalator.
By the time police arrived, however, Ho was unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic.
It was ultimately deemed to be a “natural disease process”.
