Mr. S R Nathan was truly the people’s President, even when he stepped down from his 12-year term presidency.
The Former President, Mr. S R Nathan was treated to a surprise award ceremony from the people behind The Hidden Good, long-time friends, colleagues and ordinary Singaporeans. The event was disguised as an awards presentation ceremony where Mr. Nathan thought he would be presenting an award to the “Most Outstanding Singaporean”.
Little did he know, he was presenting the award to himself.
During the ceremony, Mr. Nathan was shown a video compilation done by his former colleagues and Singaporeans from all walks of life, recounting anecdotes on the contributions he has made to the people, and all the lives he has touched.
Mr. Nathan has been doing good for others even after he stepped down from his presidency. He was also known to be the man who showed kindness and compassion to everyone in the office, even the clerks.
He treated me like a friend. he became an honorary friend to me and he would call me anytime. I know he doesn’t like any praises, But I think this is my opportunity to tell him in his face, if he is listening, that I hold him dearly.
He said, “Pang, when you receive your O levels, don’t forget to come and see me. I’ll find you a job. I’ll never forget that.”
He made sure that everyone was well-taken care of, and that their families were equipped with all the amenities they needed.
“His food was simple. I used to buy him Mee Goreng. Simple food.”
One of the video interviewees, Abdul Rahim Abdul Rahman, used to deliver letters to Mr. Nathan’s office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) before he got a recommendation to work as an office attendant in the MFA.
Mr. Nathan also issued a cheque to Mr. Rahim for his child’s education.
“Rahim, I want you to just make sure your child completes her education.”
Thank you for all the contributions you have done for us, Mr. Nathan. You will be dearly remembered.
The public can pay their last respects at Parliament House from 10am to 8pm on Thursday, Aug 25. A State Funeral Service will take place 4pm on Friday, Aug 26, at the University Cultural Centre (NUS) and will be open to Singaporeans from all walks of life.
