Do you like rendang?
If you’re anything like me, you probably also like yours…not-crispy.
I know it’s an old joke, okay? It’s just amusing every time.

So let me present to you this scenario: You buy a nice pack of beef rendang with no care in the world. 30 minutes later you’re arrested because there are drugs inside.
Oh, you think my scenario is a fairy-tale one?
Let me introduce you to a real-world, similar situation.
An Unlikely Hiding Spot
I promise you that this is not a lie.
A video on Facebook shared by VideoMalaysia showed how, in a grand I-told-you-so moment, some drugs are sneakily smuggled using beef rendang.
You can see the officer cutting open each slice of beef with no hesitation, revealing some drugs inside each one that opens.
So you can probably guess that this rendang tactic is a pretty common sight for them.

I’m just mad some good-freaking rendang was wasted on crime!
In translation, the video description reads as follows:
“This video exhibits how beef rendang is used to smuggle in drugs. We advise those travelling out of Singapore/Malaysia to Indonesia to be wary of people who require your assistance carrying any form of package.”
Speaking of beef again…
Here we have another example, with heroin being stuffed inside beef cutlets.

A fun fact for you: if you’re caught with 15g of heroin on you, you’re liable for the death penalty under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Hiding drugs in food is not a new tactic by the way. There have been other instances with catfish flakes and anchovies as well.
I think as a general rule of thumb, just don’t buy anything from a random person who walks up and sells you food.
Or if you see someone acting mad suspicious, it doesn’t hurt to call 999. In times like this, you can’t be too safe.
As for me? I’m going to be thinking about this one for a long while the next time I dig into a nice rendang.
