Rules and traffic laws are created for a reason: to limit reckless driving and to avoid unnecessary accidents from occurring. However, time and time again, there’ll be drivers who’ll cast these laws aside, playing a dangerous line between life and death for not just him/herself, but for passengers as well.
Just yesterday (26 December), Firdaus Wong Wai Hung, a Facebook user came across and filmed 2 videos of a reckless bus ride that he encountered. Later on, he posted these clips on Facebook, garnering up to 8,000 shares.
His clips depicted a distracted driver driving a Mayang Sari coach travelling from Kuala Lumpur’s Terminal Bersepadu Selatan to Johor, Muar. The bus driver could be seen using his smartphone with certain periods taking his eyes off the road. On another film, the driver decided to multi-task on a higher level where he drove, checked his smartphone and smoked a cigarette all at the same time.
The incident has since been reported and Malaysia’s Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is said to be looking into the matter. Mr Wong, the president of the Multiracial Reverted Muslims group praised the SPAD for being proactive and reaching out to him for investigation. Addressing the current issue on hand, Mr Wong wrote that “perhaps this is the reason why road accidents happen – smoking, reading messages and responding to messages while driving.” Stressing the point, he would like to highlight that although not all drivers do so, some could still be guilty of the risk.
Mr Wong also mentioned that “the videos have been shared on social media not to purposely affect someone’s rice bowl but so as to raise awareness in people such that we can work together with the authorities in keeping a lookout and to report these cases.”
It is indeed not a laughing matter when the driver decided to execute his job lightly, especially when others’ lives are in his hands. Here’s hoping that he’ll learn his lesson, for there are other drivers out there wanting to reach home to their families safely as well.
