A long, long time ago, you’d see Vivian Lai almost everywhere, drinking Pokka green tea that you’d then buy even if you weren’t not thirsty.
Her husband was then the CEO of Pokka International, and while some people weren’t happy that she became an ambassador for a big company due to her alleged ties with the CEO, it wasn’t criminal and most of us didn’t care.
But all of a sudden, in 2018, her husband, Alain Ong, was thrust into the limelight when he was suspended from Pokka due to an internal audit.
The accusations by Pokka are that Ong has did several things to cause Pokka to lose money. Here’s a simplified version of what was accused:
- Ong has ties to Kimly (yes, that coffeeshop chain)
- Pokka has a relationship with Asian Story Corporation (ASC), another drinks company
- Kimly offered to buy ASC with $16 million
If you can connect the dots, you’d know why Pokka sued Ong for a whopping $10 million.
But that’s civil ligation; why is Ong being charged by the state?
Well, because he allegedly didn’t disclose his interest in the Pokka entities when the companies entered into transactions with ASC.
These are offences under the Companies Acts, and they are considered criminal offences which carry up to 12 months’ imprisonment or fine of up to $5,000.
Ong was charged on 12 November, and two days later, on 14 November, her celebrity wife broke her silence.
Vivian Lai Breaks Silence After Her Husband Was Charged Under The Companies Act
In an Instagram post on 14 November, Lai posted two images of herself, one smiling and one without expression.
In the caption, she said, “Life is an journey and not the end. Bitterness and sweetness are external, and the real happiness comes from within. Learn to be grateful and be grateful to others. There won’t be any rainy days as long as the heart is sunny. Happy Sunday.”
Well, something like that. You won’t want me to translate directly.

In the comment section, other celebrities like Julie Tan and Zoe Tay left words (or emojis) of support.
Her ambassadorship with Pokka has come to an end in October 2018, and now, other than hosting or acting, she’s also the girlboss of a bubble tea shop, Teabrary.
