When you think library, what’s the first image that comes to your mind?
Probably something like this.
Boring, quiet (sometimes not) and ugly designs, right? I mean, books are already so 1819, much less an environment filled with these antiques.
Which probably explains why students love studying (and chilling) at cafes instead.
Great ambience, plenty of #OOTD opportunities and IG-worthy coffee.
Well, Singapore’s very own National Library Board (NLB) has an inkling of what’s going on and they’re like.
And came up with this.
National Library @ VivoCity
I mean, just look at some of the “teaser photos’ they’ve released on their Facebook page.
Look at the reading area. Imagine reading your favourite novels, or revising for your chemistry exams with a panoramic view of Sentosa right in front of you. You’ll get to know that water is H9O (or H2O?), comprising HeyTea, 9 Fresh and Osaka.
Complete with ceiling to floor windows to let the natural sunlight into the area.
The library’s interior is designed to minimalist yet tastefully artistic with mostly white bookshelves and complimentary muted carpeting.
I’m pretty sure some Instagram influencers’ going to be taking pictures at this very spot. So #OOTD worthy.
There’s even an area for kids to indulge in their imaginations and make things with their own hands.
And a truck where kids can watch their favourite stories come to life with Augmented Reality books.
Yeah, AR Books. Kind of like Pokemon GO minus the Pokemon.
Plus, a space for families to get together.
If you’re looking for a place where families can gather together to spend some family time together, this could just be the place for you.
And it’s not just about books
To prove that NLB is perfectly capable of moving on with the times, you can enjoy VR activities at the library as well.
Here, you can check out the time-lapse “video tour” NLB has prepared for Singaporeans on their Facebook Page:
Library To Open To Public On 12 Jan 2019
Excited to explore the new space at VivoCity?
The library will be open to the public on 12 Jan 2019 at 9.30 am.
This library is meant to replace the library at Bukit Merah which closed down on 1 Dec 2018.
It’s located on the third floor of VivoCity and will have the following facilities:
- Reading Lounge with 120 seats
- E-Newspaper reading area with 16 stations
- Children’s area with seating spaces for families to read together
- Multi-purpose Programme Zone to hold workshops, story-telling sessions, etc.
The entire purpose behind moving the library from Bukit Merah to VivoCity is to make their public libraries more accessible for the general public.
While there are people eagerly awaiting the opening of such an IG-worthy library, there are others who aren’t exactly pleased with it.
Government don’t charge highly for their services = wasting taxpayers’ money.
But when the government charge for their services = the government doesn’t care about its people.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
