Chan Brothers Said They’re Taking Legal Action Against Some “Public Figures” After Wang Lei Made Allegations About Them

Wang Lei is once again at the centre of a controversy. On 16 July 2023, he released two videos outlining several complaints about a tour agency. While he didn’t name the agency in his first video, he did so in the second, saying it is Chan Brothers.

Chan Brothers has since hinted at possible legal action at some “public figures”, but did not name Wang Lei.

Here’s what happened.

Background: Wang Lei’s Track Record of Controversies

Those familiar with Wang Lei will recognize his straightforward feedback style, which has resulted in numerous public disputes. A recent incident involved a disagreement with his business partner, Joe, in April.

Both parties aired their grievances in individual livestreams. It seems social media platforms like Facebook have become modern arenas for such debates…for the older generation.

Wang Lei vs Chan Brothers

On 16 July, Wang Lei broadcasted a 30-minute video on his Facebook page:

In this video, he discussed an unsatisfactory experience during a Europe tour with a particular agency. Emphasizing that he wasn’t accusing them of scamming, he nevertheless dared the agency to take legal action against him. His main contention was that the quality of services received did not justify the price.

Directing viewers to another Facebook page, he continued his livestream, this time revealing the name of the agency: Chan Brothers.

In this extended 1-hour-38-minute session, about half an hour was dedicated to discussing the tour, while the rest focused on product promotions.

The tour package, which cost Wang Lei and his team $90,000, reportedly included:

  • A tour guide
  • Local transportation (excluding flights)
  • Accommodation
  • Admission to one attraction

Wang Lei’s Concerns

The team voiced multiple concerns. For instance, they claimed their contract promised two cars (or vans) for transportation, but this was switched to a bus. This change did not sit well with some members who get motion sickness from bus rides.

Other grievances involved accommodation issues. At two hotels, room key cards were “not ready” or slotted wrongly, causing delays. One of the accommodations lacked air conditioning, and opening windows was not an option due to insects.

Additionally, Wang Lei expressed dissatisfaction over a room allocated to their driver.

The team was also frustrated to find most shops closed on a Sunday, leaving them with limited options like McDonald’s and Starbucks.

Upon addressing these issues with the agency, the response they received was dismissive, labeling the problems as “minor”. The agency reportedly offered a $10,000 refund, but Wang Lei declared any such refund would be donated.

Chan Brothers’ Statement

On 31 July 2023, Chan Brothers released a statement.

Without stating names, they said in a statement that they’ve “actively sought to address their concerns and invited them to meet in person upon their return to Singapore, so that we could deal with matters in the aftermath directly and thoroughly. Regrettably, they chose to make false and unfounded allegations against us through multiple Facebook livestreams.”

They added, “While we respect open dialogue, the severity of these defamatory statements has compelled us to take measured steps to uphold fairness and ensure the truth prevails. After careful consideration and legal advice, we have decided to take legal action to protect our trust and reputation. As we must be accountable to our stakeholders and customers, our firm response is crucial for a fair resolution and to set an example for responsible digital conversations.”

As of time of writing, Wang Lei has not responded publicly about this statement by Chan Brothers.
