I am sure we’ve all heard of some weird flavours or odd combinations of food–from soy sauce flavoured ice cream, to tom yum flavoured crickets.
However, have you ever had the chance to try wanton mee that tastes like a dirty cloth?
Reader: that doesn’t sound very appetising.
Well, one man had, according to him, a not so pleasant experience getting a taste of that…
Here’s What Happened
According to Shin Min Daily News, a patron of Marsiling Mall Hawker Centre had posted a complaint on social media regarding the wanton mee stall there.
The patron claimed that the wanton noodles gave off an odd smell, similar to a dirty cloth. To ascertain the situation, he brought his bowl of noodles back to the hawker and asked her to give it a try.
However, without acceding to his request, the hawker told him that there was no issue, and that that was the unique flavour profile that they were known for. This left him extremely unsatisfied, but he did not argue further, and paid for his meal.
The patron also added that before he left the hawker centre, he noticed another customer that did not finish his bowl of wanton mee. He claimed that this customer felt the same way about the weird flavour of the noodles.
The patron’s post sparked heated discussions amongst netizens.
While some echoed his opinions that that was disgusting, others chimed in saying that this may be an isolated occurrence due to a one-time lapse in the quality of the food, for instance, due to the oxidation of the noodles after being left out for too long. Thus, they opined that he should not sabotage the hawker’s business simply because of that.
Don’t Yuck My Yum
When Shin Min reporters visited the hawker stall, there did not appear to be any disruptions to their business.
The owner of the stall, a 48-year-old woman, told Shin Min that she has been selling wanton mee for more than ten years, and has never heard of her customer complaining about an odd smell coming from the noodles.
She said that everyone’s tastes and preferences vary–there were some Michelin-awarded food items that she did not enjoy as well. If the customer cannot appreciate the taste of her food, they can choose not to patronise her business.
She also claimed that the ingredients she uses are fresh.
She told Shin Min that she is not worried that her business will be affected by the negative comments made on social media. She believes it would be impossible to satisfy the hundreds of customers she has daily.
Reader: so does the wanton mee actually taste like a dirty cloth or not?
I can’t give you an answer, but I guess you can give it a try and get back to me!
New year new you–time to be more adventurous, am I right?
Reader: no thanks…
