A man visiting the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, more commonly known among Singaporeans as the Waterloo Street Temple, was struck by falling tiles at the temple’s entrance.
Fortunately, he did not suffer any severe injuries. Here’s what happened.
Man Struck By Falling Tiles at Entrance of Waterloo Street Temple
On Sunday (29 December), at around 10 am, a man was queuing to enter the Waterloo Street Temple when he was suddenly struck by falling tiles.
As it turns out, three tiles had fallen off the temple’s entrance, and the man just so happened to be standing right below the temple’s entrance when it happened.
Macam the temple throwing moon blocks also, except it’s three blocks instead of two.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the tiles had fallen on the man just as he was reaching his hand out to take incense sticks.
Fortunately, the man, who was in his 50s, only suffered a scratch on his arm after being struck by the three fallen tiles. He did not suffer any severe injuries.
Temple Has Since Installed Nets on the Temple Entrance
The Waterloo Street Temple has since installed nets on the temple entrance. The affected portion of the temple entrance, which is the portion where the tiles fell from, was covered using a net secured with tape.
But if you look closely at the affected portion, you’ll notice that although only three yellow tiles had fallen and struck the man, the bulk of the yellow tiles on the temple’s entrance are missing.
In fact, almost the entire lower border framed using the yellow tiles is missing.
It could be that the other yellow tiles had already fallen off before this incident happened, due to how old the temple building is.
With the safety concerns raised by this, it’s no wonder that the temple has since covered up the right side of the temple entrance as well, even though no tiles appear to have fallen off that side of the entrance.
The question, however, is whether the Waterloo Street Temple will be doing anything else to ensure the safety of visitors and devotees.
According to a temple spokesman, it seems like the answer is yes — the spokesman shared that the temple will start discussing plans for a restoration of the temple entrance soon.
So, if your ah ma wants to head to the Waterloo Street Temple this upcoming CNY and you see a few missing tiles on the temple entrance, you know what to do lah, hor?
